Unity MK

Unity MK We are a homeless charity in Milton Keynes providing welfare support and overnight winter accommodation. They can be old or young, men and women.

We provide year-round welfare support for the homeless and vulnerable and life-saving overnight accommodation in the winter months. Our Welfare Team enable our guests to recover lost ID, access benefits, access drug and alcohol support services, to obtain housing advice, move on to longer-term accommodation and to find work. People arrive at the Winter Night Shelter for many reasons. Some are long-

term homeless, but many are the victims of circumstance. They may have deteriorating domestic issues; they may have lost jobs and no longer be able to pay for accommodation. Illness, disability, mental health struggles, language barriers and lost or stolen identity documents can all play a part in someone ending up on the street. We help all those in need regardless of whether or not they have recourse to assistance from public funds.

When Karim* came to UnityMK, he wasn't just looking for somewhere to live; he was looking for safety and a fresh start.

After leaving an unsafe home environment, he had nowhere permanent to stay and turned to UnityMK for support.

Working alongside our partners, we helped Karim secure safe accommodation and supported him to access the financial help he needed to get back on his feet.

Today, he's settling into his new home and looking ahead with hope.

Every person's journey out of homelessness is different. Sometimes, having someone to walk alongside you and help you take that first step can make all the difference.

We welcome the Prime Minister’s commitment to ending rough sleeping and recognising homelessness as a national priority.

While there is much positive work taking place across Milton Keynes, homelessness remains a significant challenge. Every week, around 10 newly homeless people seek our support for the first time and around 200 people access our services, highlighting the continued need for local action.

When David came to UnityMK, he was living in accommodation where ongoing tensions between tenants left him feeling anxious and unable to relax. Although he had a roof over his head, he didn't feel secure or settled.

After being referred to us by British Red Cross David began working closely with our Welfare Team. Together, we explored his options, advocated on his behalf and supported him to access accommodation better suited to his needs. Through this support, David was able to secure a place at The Shelter MK providing a safer and more stable environment.

The impact was immediate. David recently visited our centre to tell us how relieved he feels to have somewhere he can finally feel safe, relax and begin rebuilding his life.

Since then, our support has continued. Alongside helping him access accommodation, we've been working with David to develop his digital skills and create a CV, giving him the tools and confidence to pursue employment opportunities and build greater independence.

David's story shows what can happen when the right support is available at the right time. Through partnership working, personalised support and a safe place to call home, people can begin to rebuild their confidence and look ahead to the future.

As one of our referral partners, the British Red Cross told us:

"We are really pleased with our partnership and the positive outcomes we continue to achieve for the people we support.".

☀️ Hot weather can be especially dangerous for people experiencing rough sleeping. ☀️

As temperatures rise, there are simple ways we can all help protect some of the most vulnerable members of our community.

💧 Donate heatwave essentials such as bottled water, sunscreen, hats, sunglasses and umbrellas.

🌡️ Be aware of the signs of heat-related illness, including dizziness, confusion, nausea, weakness, excessive sweating and extreme thirst. In an emergency, call 999.

📍 If you see someone sleeping rough, you can alert StreetLink or ask if they would like support from our welfare team at [email protected]. Out of hours, please contact Milton Keynes City Council's emergency line on 01908 226699.

❤️ You can also support UnityMK with a donation, helping us continue to provide practical support, advice and pathways out of homelessness for people across Milton Keynes.

Please take a moment to read and share these tips. Together, we can help keep people safe during periods of hot weather.

When Martin, in his 50s, came to UnityMK, he was facing homelessness after losing both his job and his accommodation.

Martin's circumstances had changed dramatically following a deterioration in his eyesight. Having lost sight in one eye and experiencing declining vision in the other due to cataracts, he found himself unable to continue working. The loss of his income quickly led to the loss of his housing, leaving him with nowhere stable to stay.

Our team worked with Martin to gather the medical evidence needed to demonstrate the impact his health condition was having on his situation. This has helped ensure that his housing needs are being recognised and prioritised.

While Martin is currently staying in temporary accommodation, we are continuing to support him towards a more permanent home. We are helping him access the financial assistance needed for a rent deposit and advance rent, removing some of the barriers that can prevent people from securing a tenancy.

Martin's story highlights how quickly life can change when health issues affect someone's ability to work and maintain their housing. It also shows the importance of early intervention and practical support in helping people move away from homelessness and towards a more secure future.

With the right support in place, Martin is now on the path to finding a stable home and rebuilding his independence.
