We are a homeless charity in Milton Keynes providing welfare support and overnight winter accommodation. They can be old or young, men and women.

We provide year-round welfare support for the homeless and vulnerable and life-saving overnight accommodation in the winter months. Our Welfare Team enable our guests to recover lost ID, access benefits, access drug and alcohol support services, to obtain housing advice, move on to longer-term accommodation and to ﬁnd work. People arrive at the Winter Night Shelter for many reasons. Some are long-

term homeless, but many are the victims of circumstance. They may have deteriorating domestic issues; they may have lost jobs and no longer be able to pay for accommodation. Illness, disability, mental health struggles, language barriers and lost or stolen identity documents can all play a part in someone ending up on the street. We help all those in need regardless of whether or not they have recourse to assistance from public funds.

469 volunteers. One incredible community. 💙

This Volunteers' Week, we're celebrating the 469 volunteers who gave their time to support UnityMK across our Winter Night Shelter and Homelessness Centre.

While winter often brings increased awareness of homelessness, the need for support doesn't disappear when the weather gets warmer. Every day, people continue to access our Homelessness Centre for practical help, advice, food, and a safe place to turn.

As many of our regular volunteers take well-earned summer holidays, we're looking for new people to join the team and help us keep these vital services running.

Volunteer shifts are just a few hours long:
☕ Breakfast: 7.45am–10am
🥪 Lunch: 9.30am–12.45pm
👋 Reception: 7.45am–10am or 9.30am–12.45pm

🙌 It's Volunteers' Week! 🎉

This week, we are celebrating the incredible people who make our work possible. At UnityMK, our name stands for bringing people together, and nobody embodies that spirit more than our incredible volunteers.

From supporting guests at our Winter Night Shelter and Unity Park Station, to helping with fundraising events, sorting donations, serving on our Board of Trustees, and giving their time behind the scenes... our volunteers are the absolute heart of everything we do.

Their kindness, commitment, and compassion help support people facing homelessness across Milton Keynes every single day.

Did you know that a simple smile can change someone’s entire day? One of our guests recently told us, “This is the first place today where someone smiled at me.”

For those facing homelessness, our daytime centre is a haven from exhaustion and loneliness. But to keep our doors open and welcoming, we need you.

We’re looking for morning volunteers for:

🍳 Breakfast Team: 7:15 AM – 10:00 AM

🍽 Lunch Team: 9:30 AM – 12:45 PM

👋 Front Desk / Greeting: Shifts throughout the morning

No experience needed, just a warm heart and a little time to spare. Your presence can make a world of difference to someone who needs it most.

☀️ Hot weather can be dangerous, especially for people experiencing rough sleeping.

If you see someone out in the heat, a small act of kindness can make a real difference:
💧 Offer cold water
🧢 Help them find shade
💬 Check in and ask if they’re okay

Tony*, in his 40s, came to us in acute crisis. Living with untreated schizophrenia, a history of trauma, and no access to housing support after being told he was “out of area.”

Through multi-agency working, we ensured he was connected to mental health services, with NHS clinicians providing treatment on-site. As his condition stabilised, we welcomed him into our winter night shelter.

With consistent one-to-one support from a welfare volunteer, trust began to grow, creating the foundation for change.

Our team supported him to access benefits, register with a GP, and prepare for housing. On the final day of the shelter, he was offered temporary accommodation.

Today, he is sustaining his tenancy with ongoing support, continues to access our services, and remains part of our community.

Every person deserves a chance to rebuild their life. Help us continue providing life-saving support and shelter to those who need it most.

🛏️ Urgent Sleeping Bag Donations Needed 🛏️

We know warmer weather is on the way, but recent nights have been unseasonably cold and wet, and for people facing rough sleeping, it’s been incredibly tough. Right now, we have no sleeping bags left in stock and urgently need donations.

If you have any clean, good-quality sleeping bags you no longer need, please consider donating them to UnityMK. Every donation helps someone stay warmer and safer overnight.

Recently one of our guests quietly shared with us:

“This is the first place today where someone smiled at me.”

Every day at our daytime homelessness centre, people come through our doors carrying exhaustion, loneliness, and worry. A hot meal, a friendly face, and a warm welcome can remind someone that they still matter.

We currently need more daytime volunteers for:
🥣 Breakfast service (7.15am-10am)
🍲 Lunch service (9:30am-12:45pm)
😊 Reception & welcoming guests (Throughout the morning)

You don’t need experience, just kindness, compassion, and a few hours to spare.

Volunteers are the heartbeat of our centre. For someone facing homelessness, your time and presence can make a real difference.

What an incredible, powerful night we shared at our UnityMK Big Sleepout 2026 on Friday.

To everyone who pulled on extra layers, rolled out a sleeping bag, tuned into the Facebook livestream, shared honest moments in the Diary Tent, raised funds, or cheered us on from home, thank you. Every bit of support made the night what it was, and we’re so grateful.

It was an unseasonably cold night, with some participants even waking up to ice on their sleeping bags- a stark and powerful reminder of the reality too many people face every single night without a safe place to call home.

🧡A huge thank you to the 10 incredible runners from who recently took part in the Milton Keynes Marathon Weekend, running on behalf of UnityMK and raising an amazing £3,217.02 to support our work.

Every step you ran and penny you raised helps us continue providing vital support to people facing and experiencing homelessness in our city.

We’re so grateful to everyone who trained, turned up, cheered, and donated to make this possible. What an inspiring example of community in action 🙌
