Safety Centre - Hazard Alley

Directions Website

Safety Centre - Hazard Alley The Safety Centre is a registered charity teaching people across the region how to stay safe. We also offer First Aid and Fire Safety Training courses.

Opened in 1994 by Her Royal Highness, The Duchess of Gloucester, the Centre quickly established itself as a 'must do' for schools seeking innovative new ways to introduce children to elements of the National Curriculum such as peer pressure and bullying, vandalism and personal safety. We now have an average of 20,000 children, including special needs groups, visiting per year. Since our inception, over 320,000 school children have received our interactive safety education. In 2004, the centre completed a major rebuild, including the installation of a disabled lift, which further improved the facilities for the children. In the same year we celebrated our 10th birthday and on this occasion, The Duke of Kent visited while a local school group, Giffard Park, was on their tour.

📣 EXCITING NEWS ALERT!!!!!! 🏃

Getting a place to run in the THE MOST ICONIC marathon in the world is like gold dust!!! IYKYK

SO……we couldn’t be more excited to share that we have been successful in a ballot to secure 5 charity places for the one off Marathon Double weekend in April next year, where you could make history and be one of 100,000 runners to take on the mighty 26.2 miles around our capital city.

And here’s why you should run for ….

Because too many young people have lost their lives this year to preventable accidents in open water, on the road, on bikes and scooters, through knife crime and other avoidable situations.

And our work over the last year alone has empowered almost 20,000 young people with the awareness and skills to make safer choices, and to navigate hazardous and scary situations to achieve safer outcomes.

So if you’ve considered running London Marathon before and you’d like to raise awareness and funds to support Safety Centre - Hazard Alley we’d love to hear from you.

Please email [email protected] telling us who you are, when you’re from and why you want to run for

Note, a registration fee and minimum fundraising target applies.

All places will be allocated by end of September 2026.

Thank you and good luck! 🏃‍♂️ 🏃‍♀️

It’s a scorcher this week but Mason and his team at HSS DIY Selco Builders Warehouse store have sorted us out so the centre will be nice and cool for all the children visiting us this week.

In fact, we didn’t just rent a mega fan….the guys surrendered the very unit that was keeping them cool in-store for our benefit!

Even better, they were delighted to learn that Safety Centre - Hazard Alley is still going strong as they recollected vivid memories their visit as a child!

Thanks for looking after us guys!

It’s set to be a hot start to May half term, so be sure to take extra precaution in the sun ☀️ . And if you’re planning to enjoy time by the sea, the local river or lakes. or even just setting up a paddling pool in the garden, please consider key water safety awareness and the preventative measures you can implement:

Be aware‼️

Cold water shock – sudden immersion can cause gasping, panic and breathing difficulties

Hidden dangers – weeds, debris, strong currents and sudden changes in depth

Risk of injury – jumping or diving into unknown water can cause serious harm

Supervision - even the most confident little swimmers need supervision

Meanwhile, we’ve still got places on our family day this half term which offers a cool, fun environment for the whole family to learn memorable skills to stay safe in and outside of the home.

Book now to avoid disappointment: morning and afternoon sessions available.

This we take the opportunity to highlight some of the incredible trailblazing female role models who inspired generations of women to follow in their footsteps and join a community dedicated to keeping us safe and well in our emergency services every day.

🏥🩺👩‍⚕️
In 1865, Elizabeth Garrett Anderson became the first woman to qualify as a doctor in Britain. She bypassed bans on female students by studying privately and finding a legal loophole. Her actions forced a change in rules to prevent other women from following her, a restriction that lasted for 23 years. She later became the first female mayor and first female magistrate in the UK.

🚨👮🚓
In 1915, Edith Smith made history as the UK’s first female police officer with powers of arrest, despite the Home Office advising against it…. It took another 60 years before women could join public order policing, which is the branch of policing focused on public safety during protests, marches, demonstrations and civil unrest.

🔥🧯🚒
Although records show women working in the fire service since 1879, it’s hard to believe that just 34 years ago, in 1982, Josephine Reynolds became the first female wholetime firefighter in Britain after training with Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service. Today almost 4000 female firefighters across the UK keep us safe and continue to inspire other woman to join the fire service.

We give a particular shoutout to and who have supported since our inception in 1992.
