Community is built when ordinary people choose to show up and help.

Today, members of Milton Keynes Grand Union Rotary Club were out supporting our local annual running event, managing one of the water stations to keep runners refreshed and encouraged along the route. Sometimes it’s the simple things, a smile, a cheer, a cup of water, that help people keep going.

If you’ve ever thought about getting more involved in your community, Rotary is a great place to start. It’s about friendship, service, and making a practical difference together. Contact us:- https://rotary-ribi.org/clubs/contact.php?ClubID=1774

A good day supporting a great community event. 👏

🔨 Every Stroke Counts: The Rotary Way

"The last stroke of the hammer breaks a stone. This doesn’t mean that the first stroke is useless. Success is the result of continuous effort."

In Rotary, we know that true change—whether it’s eradicating a disease like Polio, building a cleaner environment, or supporting our local youth—doesn’t happen overnight. It is the result of continuous effort from our 58 clubs and 1,308 members across Beds, Bucks, and Herts.

How this reflects our Rotary values:

Persistence: Just like that first hammer stroke, our small, daily acts of service lay the groundwork for major breakthroughs.

Fellowship: We don't swing the hammer alone. We work as a global network, knowing that every member's contribution is a vital part of the final success. 🤝

Integrity: We stay the course, committed to our projects until the "stone breaks" and the goal is achieved.

Whether you are a new member or have been with us for decades, remember: your effort matters. Every fundraiser, every meeting, and every hour volunteered is a stroke of the hammer toward a better world.

Keep swinging, District 1260! ⚙️🌍

The *correct answer* to yesterday’s quiz about Taiwan’s national animals was the variegated collie! 🏆 All the other animals are national animals of Taiwan. 🇹🇼 The *Formosan black bear* is a particularly beloved mascot. *Visit Taipei* 🏮🧋🍜 for the Rotary International Convention, *13-17 June* 2026. https://bit.ly/46gn1qu

Do you know about *rain gardens?* 🌦️ They’re a low-tech, highly effective way to *protect coastal waters* 🐬 from chemical runoff. ☠️ They even help *prevent flooding.* 🌊 Rotary members in Texas, USA, 🇺🇸 are planting rain gardens to clean up a key fishing 🐠 and wildlife 🦆 area, Baffin Bay. When he moved to South Africa 🇿🇦 in 2023, Shoki Wafula found a *welcoming Rotary community* . 👐 He was inspired to start a Rotaract club that offers its international 🌍 members a sense of belonging -- *no matter where they are* . Meeting virtually, the members build their leadership skills and support all sorts of causes. 💪 They’ve even started an *investment club.* 🪙 Find out more: https://on.rotary.org/3NIXaRz

Rotary's ongoing fight to eradicate polio.

£1565 !!!

For the 18th year Milton Keynes Grand Union Rotary Club held their annual golf fund raising event at Aspley Guise and Woburn Sands Golf Club.
33 golfers and 53 diners enjoyed the event. With everybody as generous as ever it resulted in a £1565 surplus which will be forwarded to Rotary International. This sum will then be TRIPLED due to the ongoing partnership with the Gates Foundation in America.
The Golf was keenly contested with the main prize (and trophy) being won by Roger Gillespie, Jerry Breen and Robbie MacPherson (see photo). The Secondary Competition was particularly close with three teams having the same score, but finally edged by Tony Hancock, Stella Ojacor and Fred Mercer. Jerry Breen also won the nearest the pin prize of a fine bottle of Lanson champagne.
Our thanks to all our donors and sponsors:- Woburn Golf Club, Poplars garden centre, Mike Zilles personal trainer, Richard Lally golf professional, Elaine Bradley, Rona Mercer and Susan Jackson. Without their generosity this small number of supporters could not generate this much money.
Whilst this is likely to be our final golf related event to raise money to end polio, the fight will go on and next year we shall be using a different approach. Watch this space......
My thanks for all the support for this and previous years.
Fred Mercer.
