Acorn Early Years Foundation Professional childcare with a personal touch

Acorn Early Years Foundation, is a social enterprise with charitable status, providing early years education and childcare in Milton Keynes, Northants and Bedfordshire. We have 17 nurseries across three counties, several out-of-school clubs, extensive forest school provision, a catering service and a training centre. We specialise in outdoor play and learning, the use of natural resources, healthy food, and an emphasis on the professional development for early years practitioners.

🌿 Forest School Training in Action!

We recently had the pleasure of delivering Forest School training to the team at Millennium First Steps Day Nursery Hitchin.

The session combined an introduction to the ethos and benefits of Forest School with plenty of hands-on outdoor learning, including:

🌱 Arts and crafts using natural materials
🏕️ Den building and puppetry
🛠️ Basic Forest School tool use and safe handling
🌳 Risk assessments and risk-benefit approaches

Our Forest School training is designed to give practitioners practical ideas, knowledge and greater confidence to deliver safe and engaging Forest School activities.

Two weeks from now, your child could be stirring a campfire hot chocolate, searching for hidden wildlife, creating nature crafts, or stepping into a magical woodland as a witch, wizard or fairy for the day.

These aren't the kind of half-term memories that happen in front of a screen. They're the muddy-boot, rosy-cheek, "can we come back tomorrow?" kind of adventures that children talk about long after the holidays are over.

With Autumn Adventure Day, Pumpkin Patch Explorers, Wildlife Investigators and Woodland Witches & Wizards all waiting in the woods, October half-term is closer than you think.

Boots on, excitement high and puddles waiting to be explored, the children set off on a rainy-day adventure to see who could make the biggest splash. Every puddle brought a new challenge, a new laugh and an even bigger splash than the last!

🚌🎶 "The wheels on the bus go round and round..." 🎶🚌

And that's exactly what our Oaks children were singing as they set off on a very exciting adventure to Salcey Forest - Forestry England !

For many of the children, the minibus journey was just as exciting as the destination, with plenty of singing, laughter and big smiles along the way. Once they arrived, they spent time exploring the beautiful forest with Donna and Gemma from our Forest School team, discovering nature, stretching their imaginations and making wonderful memories with their friends. 🌳🍂

From bus songs to forest adventures, it was a day packed with fun from start to finish. We think there may have been a few tired little explorers by the end of the day! 💚

Join us for our next Tots Stay & Play at Salcey Forest and enjoy a magical autumn adventure with your little one! 🌳💚

Our sessions are packed with opportunities to explore, create and connect with nature. At our last session, little explorers got busy squishing and squashing orange play dough into pumpkins, snails and spiders, gathered beautiful autumn leaves and flowers to make woodland crowns, and discovered a new part of the forest before warming up with a delicious hot chocolate around the fire. 🎃🍂👑☕🔥

🍂 The kind of half-term children talk about for weeks afterwards...

One child proudly carries home a woodland sculpture made from treasures they found in the forest.

Another can't wait to show everyone the pumpkin pies they helped create over the campfire.

By Friday, friendships have been made, imaginations have run wild, and children are heading home with muddy boots, rosy cheeks, handmade creations and stories from a week of outdoor adventures.

Our Cold Harbour Forest School Holiday Club is packed with autumn magic, from Halloween-inspired woodland crafts and mud kitchen creations to kite-making, den building and plenty of exploration amongst the changing leaves.

With spaces already filling, we know some children will be spending their half-term indoors... while others will be making memories around the forest that they'll still be talking about when they return to school.
