What motivated you to take the advanced test?

After an 18-year break from riding, I wanted to build my confidence and make sure my riding was up to a good standard. I'd already bought a bike and was really enjoying being back on two wheels, but I felt it would be useful to get some independent feedback on my riding.

I attended a BikeSafe course with Bedfordshire Police and later a Biker Down course with the Fire Service. It was at the Biker Down course that I spoke to someone from the IAM, which encouraged me to give it a go.

How did you find the experience?

Honestly, it was excellent from start to finish. From the initial taster ride, through to being assigned an observer, doing check rides with other observers, and the final pre-test ride, I found the whole process really enjoyable and supportive.

One thing that stood out was how welcoming everyone was. Whether it was a quick chat before a group ride or a coffee stop along the way, people were always happy to offer advice, answer questions and make you feel part of the group.

What did you gain from it?

Obviously, passing the test and achieving a First was a great outcome! But that was only possible because of the knowledge, patience and skill of my observer. The way things were explained and the approach taken to improving my riding suited me perfectly.

More importantly, I've gained a lot of confidence. Slow-speed riding and manoeuvring were areas I'd always felt less comfortable with, and they've improved significantly through practice and guidance. The slow riding day at OU was particularly helpful. I'm also much more confident riding in wet conditions now, something I'd previously had very little experience of.

Another pleasant surprise was the social side of the IAM. I hadn't realised just how many rides and events there were, especially over the summer and on Wednesday evenings. It's been great getting out with like-minded riders, discovering new routes and enjoying the company along the way.

Very worthwhile organisation, they do fantastic work all via volunteers.

If you have ever thought about becoming a Blood Biker your journey would start with us, as to be a Blood Biker you must have passed your Advanced test.

Today is Blood Bike Awareness Day 2026. πŸοΈπŸš—β€οΈ

Across the UK and worldwide, thousands of dedicated volunteers give their time to support the NHS and their local communities.

Blood Bike charities transport vital items including blood products, samples, medication, human milk and other medical supplies β€” helping ensure they get where they are needed, when they are needed.

And despite the name, Blood Bikes is about much more than motorcycles.

It’s the riders and drivers out on the road. The controllers answering the phones and coordinating jobs. The fundraisers who keep the wheels turning. The fleet, training and administrative teams. The trustees and all those working quietly behind the scenes.

Today we’ll be celebrating all of them and sharing a little more about the people, organisations and work behind the Blood Bike name.

Together, we keep vital supplies moving.

MKAM: Slow Riding Session – what next?
Thank you to all who made it to our Slow Riding session today.
The feedback has been brilliant – it seems everyone got something positive out of the session and many of you have requested more dates.
I wanted to invite you along to an IAM RoadSmart Advanced Rider taster session with our group. It’s a relaxed, no-pressure opportunity to experience what the Advanced Rider course is all about and see how it could benefit your riding.
The session usually includes a short ride out with one of our experienced Observers, followed by a chat over a coffee about your riding, the course, and what you’d get from it.
The Advanced Rider course isn’t about turning you into a track rider or criticising your riding style β€” it’s about helping you become smoother, safer, more confident and more in control on the road. Riders often find they:
Β· Improve their cornering and machine control
Β· Feel more confident in traffic and on longer rides
Β· Develop better observation and planning skills
Β· Enjoy riding even more
Β· Potentially reduce insurance costs through fewer claims
Most importantly, it’s enjoyable and tailored to your experience level. Whether you’ve been riding for 6 months or 20 years, there’s always something useful to take away.
