Really pleased to see that common sense has prevailed in the UK Parliament this week regarding the proposed changes to shotgun licensing.

The idea of merging Section 2 shotgun licences with Section 1 firearm rules would have created a huge amount of unnecessary bureaucracy and hassle for law-abiding shooters, farmers, pest controllers, and rural workers — without clear evidence that it would improve public safety.

Shotgun certificate holders are already vetted, monitored, and required to meet strict storage and suitability standards. Piling on extra red tape would only have stretched police licensing units further and made life harder for responsible people who follow the law.

Credit to organisations like the British Association for Shooting and Conservation and the many MPs who spoke up for proportionate, evidence-based regulation.

Let’s hope future discussions around fi****ms licensing continue to focus on practical solutions that balance public safety with fairness for legitimate certificate holders.

During the debate, not a single MP spoke in favour of merging shotgun and fi****ms licensing, delivering a clear rejection of the proposals.

Westmorland Wildfowlers Association – Youngshots Day Report

Today’s Westmorland Wildfowlers Association (WWA) Youngshots Day was hosted by the Heversham Syndicate and brought together a great mix of WWA Youngshots alongside Youngshots from neighbouring Wildfowling Associations.
The day was blessed with stunning weather in almost freezing conditions, creating perfect winter shooting surroundings. A mixed bag of pheasant and duck provided excellent sport and valuable experience for the young guns, all carried out safely and in the right spirit.

A huge thank you goes to the Heversham Syndicate for hosting such a well-run and welcoming day. Thanks also to the beating and picking-up teams, all the mentors who gave up their time to support and guide the Youngshots, and to David Higgins for all the behind-the-scenes administration and communication involved in pulling the guns together.

A thoroughly enjoyable and successful day, and a credit to everyone involved.

Keep section 1 firearm & section 2 shotgun licensing separate. I think this would help to protect law-abiding owners, the shooting industry, & rural communities. Policies should focus on real public safety issues without burdening responsible citizens or damaging heritage & livelihoods.

A lovely surprise on the marsh this morning — one of our members spotted a few glossy ibises feeding in the flashes.

Took them a moment to realise what they were seeing — these birds are a rare sight in the UK, and even rarer around here! They were happily feeding away, and when the sunlight hit their feathers, that bronze-green shine was incredible to see.

Such a special moment and a great reminder of how much amazing wildlife our marsh supports.

Westmorland Wildfowlers Association – Raffle & Show Update

A huge thank you to everyone who supported this year’s raffle – it was a brilliant success! Every penny raised goes straight into our Young Shots Program, helping the next generation get out on the marsh, learn about conservation, and enjoy the sport in a safe and sustainable way.

We also had a fantastic time at the Westmorland County Show. It was great to meet so many people, share what we do, and talk about the exciting opportunities we’re creating for youngsters in wildfowling, raising £530!

A special shout-out to Suzi Bunting, Kevin Bunting, David Higgins, Dave Coward, Ryan Teasdale, Andy Burrows, Tom Hainsworth, and Neil Stevens for all their hard work and support with the stand and raffle – we couldn’t have done it without you!

And of course, thanks again to everyone who bought tickets, donated prizes, or just stopped by for a chat – your support keeps the future of wildfowling alive and well.
