Just before Christmas we were delighted to be informed that the Millport Solar PV and Battery project had been shortlisted in the Top 5 in the UK for an Ashden Award in the 'Local Energy Innovation' category. Following the highs of winning 'Best Community Project' at the Scottish Renewables Green Energy Awards in December, what a way to finish for the holidays!

Amazing to be recognised at this level alongside some of the UK's leading community energy projects.

"Great project supporting renewable energy and storage deployment on an island community. Excellent example of what can be achieved when a community is involved in designing a project" and "Good innovation in approach to respond to community needs. Great also to see the difference that a local officer to coordinate funding can make".

What we as a community are building on Cumbrae isn't just an infrastructure project - it's a model of distributed energy, replicable and phased, whilst ensuring the money saved remains in the pockets of those who earned it in the first place... Direct Community Wealth Building.

And for the CNI Project it’s decarbonisation as a consequence of delivering on local priorities.

With another 30 properties scheduled before the end of March, here's to the next phase and to every community proving that local action can drive national change.

Many thanks again to everyone at the Ashden Awards for their recognition and kinds words in their feedback.

Still in shock and processing this… However we are delighted and extremely proud to share that Cumbrae has won ‘Best Community Project’ at the Scottish Renewables Green Energy Awards 2025 for the Millport Solar PV and Battery Project.

This is huge recognition of the work that has been happening locally, within the Carbon Neutral Island Project, CCDC, various installers (including Green Home Systems, Valley Group), North Ayrshire Council’s Energy and Sustainability Team, and the Scottish Government Islands Team.

More so, its recognition of the Cumbrae community's desire and willingness to do it differently, and in a way that works for us.

We know concerns about large renewables projects run deep on the island, and we'd like to thank the local community for the trust you’ve placed in the CNI Project and Carbon Neutral Cumbrae to deliver something different, a distributed system that works for the island, and is forming the very foundation of everything we are working towards.

Since January 2023, Cumbrae has seen a 466% increase in rooftop Solar PV. Over half a megawatt of installed capacity, representing a third of our island’s peak average demand according to SSEN and a long way towards our 1MW target by 2030.

Working at the individual, household level, generating at source... this is what delivers real savings for local people, improved energy resilience, and measurable reductions in emissions.

The job is far from done. But well done Cumbrae for doing it differently 👏

CONGRATULATIONS Cumbrae Primary School 🙌

Cumbrae Primary School has been awarded the Eco-Schools Green Flag. A huge achievement for such a small island school, its pupils, teachers, parents and wider community and yet another reason for us to be exceptionally proud of our younger generation on Cumbrae.

This global award is assessed by Keep Scotland Beautiful, and it recognises schools that embed sustainability into their daily learning and life, from the classroom to the playground, to the home. Not just a tick-box exercise, it requires a genuine hands-on journey of discovery led by the young people themselves to care about the island and its future. As with everything they do, Cumbrae Primary really embraced everything this award stands for.

Their "Caring for Marine Life" project, alongside well known local artist Harry Sutton, Drawing and Painting, was highlighted in particular by the award assessor. Pupils explored beach litter, marine waste, and ocean biodiversity, transforming their learning into striking artwork that now inspires others and hosted a public exhibition in Garrison House. The assessors described it as "a brilliant combination of creativity and environmental education", praising the thoughtful reflection and planning from pupils shown throughout.

The school’s focus on greener playgrounds, healthy eating, and reducing waste has brought sustainability into everyday routines, be it rainwater harvesting and growing areas, to beach cleans connecting learning with community action. Even the lessons learned from things that didn’t quite work such as their "drought-stricken" indoor plants became opportunities for learning and growth.

The achievement also highlights the role of Dianne Smith, our CNI Project Engagement Officer for Cumbrae and herself a retired primary school teacher, and has supported the school throughout their Eco-Schools journey. Her guidance, encouragement and hands-on help have been instrumental, organising the Cumbrae Primary School Eco Committee, and linking the pupils' efforts to the wider Carbon Neutral Islands Project.

The Green Flag demonstrates what is possible when education, creativity, and community come together with purpose. Our young people really are helping to shape Cumbrae’s work towards carbon neutrality in 2040.

It’s been almost 3 years since I became the Community Development Officer on Cumbrae for the CNI Project and we have done a lot in that time, however, this is one of the achievements I am most proud of. It’s a reminder of what our 2040 Carbon Neutral ambition on Cumbrae is really about. Yes, it is about reducing emissions, improving energy efficiency, and delivering a just transition - but at its heart, the CNI Project it’s about people and community.

When Cumbrae Primary School pupils learn to care for marine life, to value nature, and to take pride in sustainable choices, it's not just following a curriculum, they're laying a solid foundation for a generation that will think differently about energy, transport, agriculture, waste and how we live on this island.

Congratulations to each of the pupils at Cumbrae Primary School and the dedicated staff and parents for this well deserved recognition. Fly your Green Flag with pride.

We are delighted to share that Cumbrae has been shortlisted and named as one of four finalists at the Scottish Renewables 'Scottish Green Energy Awards 2025', for the Millport Solar PV and Battery Project in the Best Community Project category.

The Millport Solar PV and Battery project has played a big part in helping our community reduce fuel poverty, lower bills, and strengthen energy resilience, whilst decarbonising and staying sensitive to our island’s finite landscape, character and conservation areas.

Over the past two years, Cumbrae has increased its rooftop solar capacity by a massive 466%, reaching just over half a megawatt of installed generating capacity across homes, community buildings and small businesses.

I'm delighted to share that Cumbrae has been shortlisted and named as one of four finalists at the Scottish Renewables "Scottish Green Energy Awards 2025", for the Millport Solar PV and Battery Project in the Best Community Project category.
