This historic post is from the HAF Course Winter 2024-25 Baystone Bank Farm, Cumbrian Heavy Horses

I was asked what HAF stands for, it's the 'Holiday Activity and Food Programme', a Department for Education funded programme delivered locally and providing fun, enriching activities and tasty, nutritious meals during school holidays mainly for SEND pupils, (there's a rather overcomplicated HAF coding I won't bore you with). We again ran two courses, one for 5-10 yr olds, one age 11-16.

Many of these children struggle in mainstream education, to communicate, make friends, it's isolating, they are not able to focus in a classroom. We take them out, onto the farm, into the 'fells', they are in a farm environment, they help each other, meet new friends, with friendly dogs, the cats, our horses, it's a wonderful eclectic world which they flourish in. Many are returnees, and we love watching them relax and learn, allowed to simply be children. Thank you to the mums who stayed to support, you're superstars!

Farmlife, at grassroots!

Cumbrian Heavy Horses was delighted to participate in the HAF (Holidays, Activities and Food) Easter 2025 programme back in April. The programme, funded by Cumbrian Council, offers children from our local area with SENDS (special educational needs and disabilities) and those eligible for free school meals, places on locally run activity programmes during the Easter school holiday.
Our HAF programme was run over 4 days by our incredible staff offering children experiences including farm fit obstacle courses, orienteering, learning about our animals here on the farm and how to care for them, we had arts and crafts lessons, outdoor cooking, hill walking and egg rolling and so much more!

The children arriving each day had breakfast and a hot meal at lunchtime cooked by our wonderful chef Steve who runs the Big Horse Cafe onsite. The children were able to enjoy the activities in the amazing weather as we spent our time outside in the beautiful wilds of west Cumbria, interrupted only by needing to go inside to cuddle the orphan lambs on a frequent basis.

Thank you to all the wonderful children and their big people who enabled us to run the Easter HAF again this year, we very much appreciate your support.

Welcome to Cumbrian Heavy Horses' fledgling CIC, Wellbeing Through Farmlife!

This community interest company (CIC) has been born out of the amazing experiences we, here at Cumbrian Heavy Horses, have had running our local council funded HAF programmes during the school holidays over the last 3 years. These programmes are funded for children with SEND (special educational needs & disabilities), and children who receive subsidised school meals.

Our incredible team have worked with so many wonderful children with SENDS through these programmes and continue to work with both adults and children with SENDS and neurodivergent needs in their day to day work, running the wonderful heavy horse riding experiences we offer here at Cumbrian Heavy Horses. Our ability to cater for both adults and children with diverse needs is something we pride ourselves on.

The experiences of the HAF participant children, their families and our SENDS clients have, time and again, been overwhelmingly positive and the staff want to be able to bring these incredible experiences to wider audiences. This is why the Wellbeing Through Farmlife CIC was created, to enable us to apply for grants to offer the wonderful resources we have to wider and more diverse groups. We are seeking not only to be able to engage with children through the HAF programmes, but our hope is to reach children in many different communities, adults who could benefit from our nature centred wellbeing programmes, veterans, the elderly in our community... the list goes on.
