UPDATE: Important roadworks information

A11 southbound Elveden bypass between London Road, Thetford and Fiveways Roundabout – road marking renewal

I am writing to update you on our work to carry out road marking renewal work on the A11 southbound from Elveden bypass between London Road, Thetford and Fiveways Roundabout. This is to replace age-expired or damaged markings, studs and high friction surfacing.

We plan to complete this work over four weeks which will now start on Thursday 17 September 2026. We will work overnight between 8pm and 6am, weeknights only, weather permitting.

We’ll carry out this work alongside our skid-resistant resurfacing scheme at the A11 Fiveways Roundabout, Barton Mills.

A11 Fiveways Roundabout, Barton Mills – skid resistance resurfacing work

We plan to resurface the skid-resistant road surface at Fiveways Roundabout, where the A11 meets the A1101 and the A1065 near Barton Mills, and on the A11 southbound carriageway. The work will improve grip, particularly in wet weather, and enhance safety for all road users.

The project includes resurfacing, refreshing road markings, adjusting traffic signals, replacing worn road studs and improving skid resistance at this known collision-risk location. Once complete, road users should benefit from a safer, smoother and more clearly marked road surface.

We plan to complete this work over two weeks starting Wednesday 2 September to Thursday 17 September 2026. We will work between 9 pm and 4:30 am, weeknights only, weather permitting.

A11 southbound Elveden Bypass to Fiveways Roundabout – road marking renewal

We plan to carry out road marking renewal work to the A11 southbound between the Elveden Bypass and the Fiveways Roundabout. This is to replace faded or damaged road markings, road studs and high friction surfacing. Once complete, drivers will benefit from a better defined and safer road surface.

We plan to complete this work over four weeks starting on Monday 14 September 2026. We will work between 8pm and 6am, weeknights only, weather permitting.

For the first two nights, work will be delivered in parallel with other work at the Fiveways Roundabout using the same road closure.

As we are currently experiencing extreme drought conditions, West Suffolk Council have either stopped or are phasing out remaining grass cutting operations throughout the district until such time that weather and growing conditions change. The drought has significantly reduced grass growth by causing top growth to turn brown and restricted root depth. Although this looks serious, the grass will green up once rain returns.

During August, they will be undertaking summer pruning and other landscape works. This will involve cutting hedges and shrubs, removing epicormic growth from tree bases, clearing footpaths and spraying w**d growth. They will keep this under review and will of course reintroduce the normal service when appropriate.
