For many bereaved children and young people, Father's Day can feel impossible to escape online.

As the day approaches, social media feeds become filled with family photos, messages of appreciation and celebrations of dads. While these posts are meaningful for many people, they can be a painful reminder of loss for someone who is grieving.

Children and young people may experience sadness, loneliness, anger or even guilt for finding the content difficult to see.

These feelings are normal.

πŸ’ How can parents, carers, schools and professionals support young people when social media becomes a constant reminder of loss?

Our latest blog explores the impact of Father's Day through the eyes of a grieving child and shares practical ways to help – www.mosaicfamilysupport.org/why-the-build-up-to-fathers-day-can-feel-harder-than-the-day-itself/

As Father's Day approaches, many bereaved children experience anticipatory anxiety – the worry and emotional distress that can come from knowing a difficult day is getting closer.

They may be thinking about how they'll feel, what school will do or how they'll respond when friends start talking about Father's Day plans.

Some children may become withdrawn, emotional, irritable or distracted. Others may not show any outward signs at all.

One of the most important things adults can do is acknowledge that the build-up may be difficult and reassure children that whatever they're feeling is okay.

πŸ“– Read our latest blog to explore why the weeks before Father's Day can be so challenging for grieving children and how we can better support them.

β›΅πŸ’™ What an incredible Mosaic Activity Day!

26 children and young people enjoyed a fantastic day at the Andrew Simpson Centre, Portland, thanks to the generous support of and the Andrew Simpson Sailing Centre.

While the original plan for a morning of sailing had to be adapted due to 45mph winds and rain, that certainly didn't stop the fun! The children embraced the challenge and enjoyed giant paddle board games, kayaking, and even jumping into the harbour, creating plenty of smiles, laughter and positive memories along the way.

These activity days provide so much more than just fun experiences. They offer opportunities for bereaved children and young people to build confidence, connect with others who understand their experiences, and simply enjoy being children.
While the young people were out on the water, our wonderful volunteers hosted a Bereavement CafΓ© for parents and carers, providing a space for families to connect, share experiences and access support.

We were also delighted to welcome South Dorset MP, Lloyd Hatton, who took time to meet our volunteers, counsellors and families, learn more about Mosaic's work, and brave the stormy weather to see the children in action on the paddle boards.

A huge thank you to and the Andrew Simpson Centre for making this special day possible, and to everyone who helped create such a memorable experience for the children and families we support. πŸ’™

πŸš΄β€ A huge thank you to Jon Cotton, who recently completed the Gravel Dash – a challenging 100km cycle ride across the Purbecks – in support of Mosaic πŸš΄β€

Taking on the event in temperatures of 28Β°C, Jon was determined to reach the finish line and raise funds for children and young people affected by bereavement.

Jon chose to support Mosaic following the heartbreaking loss of his wife, Laura, on Christmas Eve. He hopes that, as his daughter Beth grows and begins to understand more about her loss, she may benefit from the support that Mosaic provides to bereaved children and young people.

We're incredibly grateful to Jon for sharing his story and for taking on such an epic challenge in support of our work.

Thank you also to everyone who sponsored Jon and helped raise funds for Mosaic. Your generosity will help us continue supporting children and young people across Dorset as they navigate grief and loss.

πŸ’› Thank you, Jon, for turning such a profound loss into something that will make a difference for others.

Father's Day can be difficult for bereaved children and young people long before the day itself arrives.

From supermarket displays and social media posts to school activities and conversations with friends, reminders can be everywhere. For many children, the anticipation of a difficult day can bring anxiety, sadness, frustration and emotional exhaustion.

In our latest blog, we explore:
πŸ’™ The emotional build-up to Father's Day
πŸ’™ How schools can unintentionally create anxiety
πŸ’™ The impact of social media reminders
πŸ’™ Why there is no "right" way to feel
πŸ’™ Practical ways adults can offer support

We also share how Mosaic supports bereaved children through counselling, bereavement cafΓ©s, Grief Ambassadors and guidance for families, carers and schools.

πŸ’œ This Carers Week, we're taking a moment to recognise and send love to the incredible carers who provide support, comfort and strength to those they care for every day.

Caring for a loved one with a serious illness can bring many challenges, both practical and emotional. For families facing these circumstances, there can be feelings of uncertainty, worry and sadness, alongside the day-to-day responsibilities of caring.

Children and young people are often affected too. They may be trying to make sense of changes within their family, cope with difficult emotions, or prepare for the loss of someone important to them.

At Mosaic, we understand the impact that serious illness, anticipatory grief and bereavement can have on young lives. We are here to help children, young people and their families navigate these experiences and feel supported along the way.

This Carers Week, we want to say a heartfelt thank you to all carers. Your compassion, resilience and dedication make an enormous difference, often in ways that go unseen πŸ’œ

If you feel your child or family could benefit from additional support, please get in touch to find out more about our services.
