This Spring the concerts have come at short intervals and it is less than two weeks until the last one, on 25th April. This will be a recital by the renowned bassoonist Laurence Perkins and Yoshiko Endo playing a Roland keyboard. The keyboard has a range of digital facilities and we are promised a concert combining the "natural sound of traditional classical music performance with stunning new digital technology". Intriguing?! The programme is listed on the web-site (madcs.org.uk).

The March concert featured four students from the Junior Royal Northern College of Music, who reached and often exceeded the levels of performance we have come to expect from them. The future of classical music is in good hands! The picture shows (from the left) Oliver Pearce (cello), Emily Edge (voice), Jayvas Wong (saxophone) and Vinchy Ho (oboe). A report is on the web-site.

The Concert Royal provided a fascinating insight into the music and sounds of Georgian Britain, with period instruments of quite different tones from their modern counterparts. The picture shows them in full flow!

The next concert, on Saturday, 21st March, will provide a complete contrast. Four students from the Junior Royal Northern College of Music will be coming. There will be oboe, saxophone and cello instrumentalists, plus a soprano. Their visits are never dull and frequently provide the surprise performance of the season.

As ever, see the web-site (madcs.org.uk) for details, although the programme will only be revealed on the night!

After a successful piano recital by Paul Janes, ably assisted by Joy Naylor and with a full report on the web-site, we are looking forward to the next concert. This will be on Saturday, 21st February and will feature the Concert Royal. This group specialises in early music, but their programme "Music for a Georgian Drawing Room" has a vast repertoire from which to choose since the Georgian era ranged from 1714 to 1830! They will use instruments from the period and period instruments. This could be the high-light of the season, but you will have to come to find out! As usual full details are on our web-site: madcs.org.uk.

We are already half way through January and preparing for the next concert. This will be on Saturday, 24th January and will be a piano recital by Paul Janes. The full progamme is listed on the web-site (www.madcs.org.uk). Perhaps the most interesting piece will be Francis Poulenc's The Story of Babar [L’Histoire de Babar, le petit éléphant], with narration in English by Joy Naylor. There are also a piano sonata by Mozart, several pieces by John Ireland and Debussy's Children's Corner Suite. Something for everyone! And on a grand piano supplied by Shackleford Pianos of Macclesfield. No expense spared!

The second concert of the 36th season is almost upon us. In fact it will take place next Saturday (15th November). Heather Gordon-Redfearn (clarinet) and Eileen Guppy (keyboard) played in these concerts in January 2024 and produced such a flamboyant and enjoyable concert that it seemed sensible to invite them back to see what they might produce this time. The programme for the concert is on the web-site (www. madcs.org.uk) and looks every bit as diverse as before, ranging from classical to jazz. Something for everyone!

As usual the concert will take place in the Middlewich Community Centre, starting at 7:30 pm, and it still costs only £12 (cash or cheque - no cards).

The 36th season of concerts starts on Saturday 27th September with the Roth Guitas Duo. The concert will take place in the Middlewich Community Centre, starting at 7.30 pm. Apart from Farewell to Stromness by Sir Peter Maxwell Davies all the music was written for the guitar. There will be pieces by well-known composers such as Castelnuovo-Tedesco, Granados and Albeniz and also some by contemporary composers (Ivanovic and Pujol). The last piece in the programme will be Homecoming by Yvonne Bloor, written for the Duo and a reflection of the high regard in which they are held. Something for everyone? We hope so!

Full details of the programme and other useful bits of information are on the web-site www.madcs.org.uk. Alternatively phone Roger Evans on 01606 834471.

It is almost time for the next concert. This will be a piano recital by Wendy Nugent and will take place on Saturday, 26th April, 2025 in Middlewich Community Centre.

The ever popular Wendy Nugent is no stranger to the Middlewich and District Concerts Society concerts so her next performance is eagerly awaited. As before she will be playing on a grand piano. No expense spared!

Her programme ranges from the Solfeggietto by CPE Bach and to Un Soufle du Passé by the young Russian pianist Daria Vasileva, so you can guess at the range of styles involved. The heavy-weight piece is Mozart's sonata in F, K332. There are lots of shorter classical gems as well - a Chopin Ballade, Debussy's Clair de Lune, Felix Mendelssohn's Rondo Capriccioso and the three Preludes by Gershwin. A feature of the recital will be the work of female composers, starting with F***y Mendelssohn and continuing with Amy Beach, Cécile Chaminade and finally Daria Vasileva. Who knows what else might turn up? A concert definitely not to be missed. Full details are on the web-site www.madcs.org.uk, or contact Roger Evans on 01606 834471 for more information.

The Middlewich and District Concerts Society has become accustomed to excellent performances by students from the Junior Royal Northern College of Music and this concert was one of the best. The Head of the JRNCM, Aled Tudor, introduced the students and gave an insight into the work of the college and the commitment of the parents. Pete Durrant provided the piano accompaniment where appropriate.

Millie Huang (13) opened the concert with Introduction, Cadenza and Rondo by Elias Parish Alvars. She has already won many competitions playing the harp and it was instantly clear why. What a talent! Later she played the Allegro from John Parry's first sonata and Sun Dance from the Santa Fe Suite by William Mathias.

We have never seen as many mutes as employed to great effect by Elia Karim (trumpet) in the second movement of Kent Kennan's sonata. He also gave rousing performances of Rondo for Lifey by Bernstein and the Vivace movement from Neruda's Trumpet Concerto.

The singer this year was Madeleine North, with a wide range of pieces by Mendelssohn, Handel, Eric Thiman, Schubert and Reginald Morgan, which held the audience spellbound throughout. She had excellent diction, a lovely tone and great control.

James Uttley (16) also grabbed the attention of the audience with commanding performances of movements from Beethoven's sonata for violin and piano, Opus 30/3 and the sonata for violin BWV1005 by JS Bach. His delivery of Kreisler's Praeludium and Allegro in the style of Pugnani was extraordinary.

There is clearly a pool of extraordinary talent out there. We have to ensure that opportunities exist for them to demonstrate what they can do and for audiences to experience it.

After a splendid concert by Lucy Nolan last month it is almost time for the next one in the 2024-2025 series. The press report on Lucy's recital is on the web-site (www.madcs.org.uk) and there is a picture of her playing the lever harp below.

The March concert, on the 15th, features students from the Junior Royal Northern College of Music:

"For the eighteenth consecutive season the Middlewich and District Concerts Society is delighted to welcome a group of young musicians from Junior Royal Northern College of Music. On each of their previous visits they have enthralled us with their verve and quality and will soon be with us again for “Before They Become Famous XVIII”.

"As students at the Junior Royal Northern College of Music they show tremendous commitment, since the tuition is in addition to their normal school activities. Who will come this time is yet to be revealed. There will be piano accompaniment where appropriate. What they will all play and sing will be revealed on the night, but our previous experiences lead us to expect a fascinating evening of music, with the distinct possibility of the surprise performance of the season. As always, expect the unexpected!"

As an indicator of the quality we have come to expect one of last year's students, Ella Hodgson-Laws (violin), progressed into the final 50 of the BBC Young Musician competition. Come and be amazed by the emerging talent on show!
