Did you know?

Many survivors of honour-based abuse stay silent because they fear:

• Bringing shame on their family
• Community judgement
• Losing support networks
• Not being believed
• Escalation of abuse or violence

These fears can stop people from seeking help for years.

No one should have to choose between their safety and their community.

At Halo Project, we provide specialist, culturally informed support for survivors facing honour-based abuse and other hidden harms.

We listen.
We believe.
We protect.

Did you know?

Honour-based abuse is not always physical.

Many survivors experience:
• Constant monitoring
• Restricted movement
• Control over friendships or relationships
• Isolation from support
• Threats linked to family “honour”

These behaviours are forms of abuse and control.

Recognising hidden harm early can help prevent escalation and protect lives.

Did you know?

Forced marriage is illegal in the UK.

A forced marriage happens when pressure, threats, coercion, or abuse are used to make someone marry without their full and free consent.

This is recognised as:
• Domestic abuse
• Child abuse
• A serious abuse of human rights

Consent given under fear or pressure is not real consent.

If you are worried about yourself or someone else, support is available.

As Mental Health Awareness Week comes to an end, the conversation shouldn’t stop here.

Mental health is shaped by safety, support, relationships, trauma, housing, finances, and access to services.

For survivors of abuse, recovery is not linear - and no one should be expected to navigate it alone.

Let’s continue creating communities where people feel safe asking for help and supported when they do.

Support is available.

Trauma does not always look visible.

Sometimes it looks like:

- Anxiety
- Emotional exhaustion
- Hypervigilance
- Isolation
- Difficulty trusting others
- Feeling constantly overwhelmed

Many survivors are managing the impact of trauma every day while trying to rebuild their lives.

Mental health support must be compassionate, trauma-informed, and culturally aware.

Mental health affects every part of our lives - yet many people still struggle in silence.

For survivors of abuse, trauma can impact sleep, confidence, relationships, emotional wellbeing, and daily life long after the abuse has ended.

This Mental Health Awareness Week, we want to remind people:
You are not weak for needing support.

You do not have to carry everything alone.

Healing starts when people feel safe enough to speak and supported enough to be heard.

A reminder that healing does not always look loud.

Sometimes it looks like:

Asking for help for the first time
Attending a support session
Feeling safe enough to speak openly
Laughing again
Making plans for the future

Every step forward matters.

At Halo Project, we see the strength it takes to rebuild after abuse, and we remain committed to supporting survivors at every stage of that journey.

The Domestic Homicide Project's annual report, published today and covered by the BBC, makes clear that 150 suspected su***des following domestic abuse in a single year is not something we can ignore. 347 people died in domestic abuse-related deaths in the year to March 2025.

150 of them took their own lives following abuse.
The majority were already known to agencies.

This is not a data problem. It is a system failure.

Today's findings must also be read alongside the ground-breaking research by Dr. Maz Idriss of Manchester Law School and The Halo Project which exposes how honour-based su***des remain invisible in our legal system.

With perpetrators escaping justice through loopholes that the law has failed to close, and calls for a new statutory offence of 'su***de aggravated by harassment, violence or abuse' to finally hold abusers accountable for the deaths they cause.

Survivors and their families deserve change.

Commenting on the matter, “Dr Maz Idriss has said that changes in the law and the way it is interpreted must be undertaken if we are to deliver justice for victims and bring perpetrators to account for causing their victims to sadly take their own lives”.

What does our national accreditation actually mean?

For the women and girls we support, it means:

- Safe, consistent, high-quality support
- Services that are accountable and trusted
- Responses that are shaped by real experiences, not assumptions

Our accreditation from Women’s Aid Federation England - achieved without qualification or condition - reflects the standard we hold ourselves to every day.
