Navigator North are a Tees Valley based, artist led organisation who initiate activities to raise the profile of artists and creative practice in the North East – inspiring visual artists and creative communities to thrive. Established in 2010 and directed by arts professional and curator, James Lowther and artists Vicky Holbrough and Nicola Golightly, we have provided over 100 artists with studio

space across 15 different sites in Tees Valley and County Durham. Regular programmes offer professional development opportunities and support to artists to make and show work through artist bursaries, commissions, exhibitions, events and residencies in alternative spaces. Curated to specific themes, programme activities aim to raise the public awareness of artists, artworks and creative practice, stimulating dialogue, interaction and engagement between artists and the public.

You can now find us on Artist Studio Finder as a Studio Provider in the North - a free online platform connecting artists and arts organisations to available spaces.

Our spaces partner East Street Arts have teamed up with Bow Arts to create a new way to find affordable studio spaces across the North of England.

Look out for further listings, as we have plenty of space available at the moment at our HQ Dundas House in the centre of Middlesbrough.

Monthly studio costs from £60/month.

More info on our application process is available on our website too.

Read all about how, with support from Middlesbrough Council's Creative Places programme, we've been able to extend and build on the WE SHALL BE murals along Wilson Street underneath the A66.

We're really pleased with the new series of artworks created by artists Nick Blaney and Nic Golightly - informed by the heritage and communities of Middlesbrough.

Last week we took our 2026 Studio Bursary artist Ayodeji Faturoti on a road trip to Leeds, to meet with our space partners East Street Arts, get some insights from industry professionals and attend the opening of an amazing exhibition ‘Lens on Gaza: The Sun and Moon Still Rise’ by photographer and activist Fadi A. Thabet.

There's 10 more days left to visit Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art to see Desire Lines: Art, Place & Possibilities.

We were delighted to be invited to explore and share some of our journey in Middlesbrough, to feature alongside some fantastic artists and arts organisations.

Whether you've been already, are planning a first or repeat visit, the review here written by Kate Sweeney for Corridor 8 is a good read -

Over the last 6 months with funding from Historic England through the UK Government’s Know Your Neighbourhood Fund we ran our Open House programme.

Based in the ground floor space at Dundas House Dundas Shopping Centre & Indoor Market through our work with East Street Arts we've taken that work out on to the streets of Middlesbrough - Bridge Street West to be precise!

We couldn't have done this without the support of our volunteers with 92 volunteer hours spent on creative and heritage research activities as well as 408 volunteer hours in the Open House space supporting our public programme every Saturday between October 25 and April 26.

Now that programme has come to an end, we're planning what comes next, so watch this space for future announcements and ways to get involved.
