If you're starting to think about what happens after school, the booklet is a useful resource to explore as a family and help start those conversations about your young person's next steps. 📍🎓 MIDDLESBROUGH SPOTLIGHT | Post-16 Options

What comes after Year 11 for a young person with SEND in Middlesbrough?

There isn't just one answer. 💚

As your young person gets closer to leaving school, there are different Post-16 pathways and provisions to explore locally.

Some of the local options families may come across include:

🎓 Middlesbrough College, which offers courses across a wide range of occupational areas and levels.

🌱 Lingfield Learning Centre, a Middlesbrough education and training provision offering bespoke learning opportunities, including a Study Programme and Supported Internship opportunities.

💼 Supported Internships, giving eligible young people opportunities to gain experience in real workplaces while developing skills towards employment. Middlesbrough's Local Offer has a dedicated Supported Internships and Apprenticeships section.

🏥 NHS England Choices College, which provides individually tailored Supported Internships for eligible 16 to 24-year-olds with learning difficulties, disabilities and/or autism.

🛠️ Apprenticeships, combining practical training in a job with study.

💡 The right next step will look different for every young person.

Looking at options early gives families and young people time to think about their:

⭐ Interests
💪 Strengths
💭 Aspirations
🤝 Support needs
🎯 Longer-term goals

📍🚌 MIDDLESBROUGH SPOTLIGHT | Independent Travel Training

For some young people with SEND, learning to travel independently can be a really important step towards greater independence. But they may need some extra support to develop the skills and confidence to do it.

Did you know Middlesbrough Council has an Independent Travel Training (ITT) programme?

The service supports young people with SEN and additional disability needs to develop the confidence and skills needed to travel safely and independently to and from their school or college.

Where a young person is considered suitable for the programme, they can be allocated a Travel Trainer who works with them to develop their skills, with the aim of helping them become an independent traveller.

📋 How is the service accessed?

The Local Offer says referrals can come through:

🏫 The young person’s school SENCo
🤝 The 0–19 service
🚌 The Integrated Transport Unit

Following referral, an Independent Travel Needs Assessor considers whether the programme is suitable for the young person and/or what level of travel support they may need.

💚Learning to travel independently can be about much more than getting from A to B. It can help a young person develop skills and confidence as they move towards greater independence.
