๐ŸŒฑ Celebrating 5 Years of Climate Action in Middlesbrough! ๐ŸŒ๐Ÿ’š

Last month, Actes Trust wrapped up the final phase of the Climate Action Middlesbrough (CAM) programme with a series of inspiring legacy projects that highlight five years of environmental creativity, collaboration, and community spirit.

From tyre planters at local schools and hubs ๐ŸŒผ to murals and community gardens ๐ŸŽจ๐ŸŒฟ, our CAM legacy is now woven into the fabric of Middlesbrough.

๐Ÿ’š From murals to gardens, hereโ€™s how CAM left its mark:
โœ… Vibrant planters at Clover Group & Newport Hub
โœ… Pupils at Archibald & Marton Manor installing eco-friendly planters
โœ… A powerful pledge board at Marton Manor Primary
โœ… The Our Place in the Family of Things exhibition at Dorman Museum (on until Sept 14!)
โœ… Revamped Essex Street community garden with local art
โœ… Nature-themed mural at Abingdon Primary School
โœ… New vegetable beds at Trinity Methodist Church
โœ… Welcoming mural at Rainham House
โœ… Allotment transformation at Community Ventures in Thorntree

These projects are more than just green spaces - theyโ€™re a testament to what we can the people of Middlesbrough can achieve together. Together We are Middlesbrough. ๐ŸŒ๐Ÿ’š

Thank you to every single one of you that supported Jade and Ali on their CAM journey and thank you to everyone who got involved.

Jade and Ali, our Climate Action Middlesbrough Engagement Officers have been working with the HeadStart South Tees students at Whinney Banks Primary School in Acklam since November 2023, their first Headstart group in 2023/2024 achieving their Gold Awards! ๐ŸŒŸ

The children from the 2025 cohort have now completed their Climate Action Clubs and have been working equally as hard on some fascinating projects ๐Ÿ’ช

The group have taken part in sessions on a wide variety of topics such as:

๐Ÿพ Biodiversity
๐ŸŒฟ Local Habitats
๐Ÿ™ Ocean Pollution
๐Ÿฏ Animals
โ™ป๏ธ Recycling
๐Ÿ‘• Fast Fashion
โ˜€๏ธ Renewable Energy
๐Ÿ’ง Water Waste
๐Ÿ” Food Waste
๐Ÿ“ Smoothie Bike

The Club have created animal masks, textile collages, plastic pollution art work, windmills and climate awareness posters, they have taken part in debates, quizzes and litter picks, and they have finished their time with us by creating their own smoothies ๐Ÿ’๐Ÿ๐ŸŽจ๐Ÿ–Œ๐ŸŒโšก๐Ÿ’ก๐Ÿ“š๐Ÿ–โœ‚๏ธ

Well done to the Headstart group 2025 for achieving your Climate Hero awards and good luck at your chosen secondary schools this September! ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐ŸŽ“๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐ŸŽ“

Last week, Engagement Officers Ali & Jade finished off by inviting Executive Member for Environment and Sustainability, Councillor Peter Gavigan to join them on a litter pick with the Climate Action Club at Archibald Primary School โ™ป๏ธโ™ป๏ธ

After a short discussion on litter and pollution, the children were introduced to Peter and everyone set off for a clean up outside of the school grounds.

The children found the remains of a large fly-tip fire just outside of the school gates and reported it to Peter who is now organising its removal with the councils clean-up team ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿ’ช

Climate Action Club collected lots of bags of rubbish which has made a huge difference to the front of the school and surrounding area......well done everyone!

Ali and Jade have also delivered a Climate Action Club on Water where the children discussed the water cycle, where water comes from before it reaches our taps, how we use water and how we can save water ๐Ÿšฟ๐Ÿšฝ๐Ÿ›๐Ÿงบ๐Ÿงผ

The children created some informative posters about turning off the taps when not in use which are now displayed above the school sinks as a reminder ๐ŸŒŠ๐ŸŒŠ

According to Water UK, 46% of people believe their household only uses under 20 litres of water a day when, in reality, the average person uses around 142 litres per day!! ๐Ÿ’ง๐Ÿ’ง

We have spent a few sessions on a special project with the members of the Clover Group Education and Social Hub in Middlesbrough.

Nite Light CIC is a Community Interest Company based in Middlesbrough. Their aim is to bring communities together through digital technology. Nite Light support the most vulnerable people in our community by offering a number of services including a "Pay Forward" scheme which reduces begging on the streets and provides food, drink and hygiene packs to all that need them ๐Ÿฅซ๐Ÿฅ›โ˜•๐Ÿฅ—๐Ÿ๐Ÿฅช

One project that our Climate Action Middlesbrough Engagement Officers, Ali & Jade were interested in was the crisp packet project. We know that sleeping bags are something that can cost a lot, so Nite Light have up a scheme which recycles crisp packets and makes sleeping bags for anyone who finds themself homeless.

The crisp packets are collected and ironed together to create a large, foiled blanket. The foil acts as an insulator and the bags are waterproof. It takes around 150 packets to create one sleeping bag so our members at the Clover Group have been busy collecting ๐Ÿ’ช

Everyone at the Clover Group has had a go using the irons that we provided, some for the first time. The blankets are nearly ready to be turned into sleeping bags so please watch this space for the final results!

Food Waste Action Week 2025 took place from March 17 - 23. This annual campaign aims to raise awareness about the environmental, social, and economical impacts of food waste. It is led by the Waste and Resources Action Programmes (WRAP) Love Food Hate Waste campaign and encourages individuals, businesses, and communities to adopt more sustainable food habits ๐ŸŽ๐ŸŒ๐Ÿ’๐Ÿฅ๐Ÿฅฆ๐ŸŒถ๐Ÿฅ•

Climate Action Middlesbrough Engagement Officers Jade & Ali, delivered some food based sessions during Food Waste Action Week at a variety of schools and community groups.

Everyone learnt about where our meat, fruit and vegetables come from, the carbon footprint created during food production, transportation, sales, purchasing and decomposition. We all agreed that we can all put too much food on our plates at meal times and some of it can go to waste ๐Ÿšœโœˆ๐Ÿ„๐Ÿท๐Ÿ๐ŸŸ๐ŸŠ๐ŸŽ๐Ÿ๐Ÿค๐Ÿฅง

The groups discussed ways in which we could help such as smaller portion sizes, eat less meat and try vegetarian or vegan cooking and baking ๐Ÿ๐Ÿœ๐Ÿฐ

We finished our sessions with a quick "Compost or Don't Compost" card game and then decorated some gingerbread biscuits using vegan/vegetarian ingredients ๐ŸŒŸ

Thank you to the Climate Action Club children and adult groups at Archibald Primary School, Whinney Banks Primary, Marton Manor Primary School and the Clover Group Education and Social Hub.

We were recently invited to take part in a careers fair at Sunnyside Academy - Coulby Newham. The fair was great success, enabling the primary school children to take a look at the different job roles, businesses and organisations that are in their local area.

We took along our ever popular smoothie bike ๐Ÿšดโ€โ™€๏ธ and discussed healthy eating, sustainable energy, exercise for good mental wellbeing and future careers in the Green industries โ™ป๏ธ

The children attended the fair dressed as their favourite job role. We had lots of police officers, firefighters and doctors ๐Ÿ’ช

Well done everyone and thank you for a great day ๐ŸŒฟ

Last week, our Climate Action Engagement Officers, Ali & Jade, took part in multiple litter picks across the local area as part of the ๐ŸŒŸ

They attended a large beach clean hosted by Durham Wildlife Trust ๐Ÿพ & Heritage Coast Partnership ๐ŸŒŠ in Seaham, a village litter pick organised by Loftus Town Council and a local litter pick with the Climate Action Club's Head Start group at Whinney Banks Primary School in Acklam ๐ŸŒฟ

Dozens of bags were filled and you still have time to carry out your own litter pick as The Great British Spring Clean doesn't end until the 6th of April ๐Ÿ’ช
