Everyone deserves the chance to thrive. ๐Ÿ’š

Saturday 17 October is the United Nation's International Day for the Eradication of Poverty โ€“ a reminder that potverty is about more than money. It can affect access to nutritious food, a warm home, good health and opportunities for the future.

And behind the issue of poverty are people, families and communities โ€“ each with their own experiences, challenges and hopes for the future.

At Nine Yards, we work alongside people, communities and partners across the Tees Valley to tackle poverty and inequality in all its forms - and help create a brighter future for everyone.

๐Ÿฅ• Our Eco Shops help make affordable food accessible.

๐Ÿก Our Affordable Warmth team helps people find support with energy costs and keeping their homes warm.

๐ŸŒฑ Our community growing, active travel, health and wellbeing projects help people build healthier, more sustainable lives.

But lasting change takes all of us. By working together, we can tackle the barriers people face and build thriving communities where everyone has the opportunity to flourish.

Because when communities come together, everyone has the chance to thrive.

Transformations are inevitable. Exclusion isnโ€™t. ๐ŸŒ

How do we build a future where everyone has the opportunity to thrive?

Thatโ€™s the question at the heart of the United Nations 'World Social Report 2026: The New Economics of Social Inclusion โ€“ Making Transformations Work for All'.

Its message is clear: economic, digital and green progress wonโ€™t automatically benefit everyone. We need to invest in people, tackle inequality and make sure communities have the opportunities and support they need to flourish.

Here in the Tees Valley, that matters.

At Nine Yards, we work alongside people and communities to tackle poverty, improve health and wellbeing, support more sustainable living and create opportunities for positive change.

๐Ÿฅ• Our Eco Shops help make affordable food accessible.
๐Ÿก Our Affordable Warmth team helps people manage energy costs and access support.
๐ŸŒฑ Our community growing and active travel projects help people live healthier, more sustainable lives.
๐Ÿค๐Ÿผ And our work is aligned with the UNโ€™s Sustainable Development Goals - in particular Goal 3: Good Health and Well-being, Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities and Goal 13: Climate Action.

These goals reflect our belief that sustainability is about caring for people, place and planet โ€“ and recognising how closely they are connected.

Because a greener future and a stronger economy mean more when everyone has the chance to benefit.

A thriving Tees Valley must work for everyone. ๐Ÿ’š

๐ŸŒ๐ŸŽ World Food Day 2026: Innovate today. Nourish tomorrow.

Today, 16 October, is World Food Day - a chance to think about how we can build a food system that works better for people and the planet.

At Nine Yards, we believe everyone should have access to good, affordable food, and that perfectly good food shouldn't go to waste.

Thatโ€™s why our chain of Eco Shops is so important. By redistributing surplus supermarket food, we help people across Middlesbrough and the Tees Valley make their money go further, while giving good food a second chance.

Itโ€™s a practical, community-led way to tackle food waste, improve access to affordable food and help create a fairer, more sustainable future.

Because nourishing tomorrow starts with the action we take today. ๐Ÿ’š

๐Ÿก Practical advice to help keep homes warm and bills down!

Connor from our Affordable Warmth team joined local parents at West Middlesbrough Family Hub this morning to chat about saving energy at home and staying safe.

From simple, low-cost ways to cut energy bills to carbon monoxide awareness, gas safety and government grants for renewable technology, the session offered practical advice tailored to everyday life.

There was also plenty of opportunity for open discussion, with parents sharing their experiences and asking questions about their own circumstances. ๐Ÿ’š

Need advice on keeping your home warm and energy bills manageable? Our Affordable Warmth team is here to help. Email: [email protected] or call 01642 579820.

Our Eco Shops are about more than affordable food. ๐Ÿ’š

They're about making the most of good food, reducing waste and bringing communities together.

By redistributing surplus supermarket food that is still perfectly good to eat, our Eco Shops help people save money while giving food a second chance. ๐Ÿฅฆ๐ŸŒฝ๐Ÿ๐ŸŒถ๏ธ

And because each shop is shaped around its local community, every one has a part to play in building a fairer, more sustainable food system.

Good for people. Good for the planet.

Did you know our Eco Shops began in a Middlesbrough primary school? ๐ŸŽ

Back in 2018, Park End Primary School teamed up with Nine Yards (then Middlesbrough Environment City) to make good food that might otherwise go to waste available to local families.

The schoolโ€™s Eco Squad helped launch a weekly pop-up shop - and a brilliant community idea began to grow!

Today, Eco Shops help people access affordable food while tackling food waste across Middlesbrough and the wider Tees Valley.

A small idea making a big difference. ๐Ÿ’š

๐Ÿ“ฃ Could YOU host a FREE Heat & Eat event?

No one should have to choose between staying warm and eating well. Thatโ€™s why our Heat & Eat sessions bring people together to learn practical ways to save energy, eat well on a budget and feel more confident at home.

Each friendly, interactive session includes:
๐Ÿฅ• Affordable, healthy food and meal ideas
๐Ÿณ Cooking tips and ideas for eating well on a budget
๐Ÿ’ก Simple ways to reduce energy costs
๐Ÿ”ฅ Energy-saving tips and help understanding energy bills
โš ๏ธ Carbon monoxide awareness and gas safety
๐ŸŽฒ Fun activities, games and plenty of time for questions

For local residents, itโ€™s a chance to learn, connect and pick up practical tips that could make a real difference to their household โ€“ all in a welcoming, supportive environment.

Now, weโ€™re looking for community groups, venues and local organisations who could help us bring Heat & Eat to more people.

๐Ÿ“ฃ Could your community benefit from a session? Weโ€™d love to hear from you.
๐Ÿ“ฉ Email our Affordable Warmth team at [email protected] to find out more or call 01642 579820 to talk to us about hosting a session.
