Merthyr Cynon Foodbank

Merthyr Cynon Foodbank We provide emergency food supplies to individuals and families in crisis. To contact the foodbank, please click the word 'about' below.

The foodbank is designed to help individuals and families in crisis through the provision of emergency food supplies. Local care professionals in the Merthyr-Cynon area refer people, with a food voucher, to the foodbank centre where they are given their food supplies, a cup of coffee and help in finding other professionals who can help them out of their crisis. (In rural areas we deliver Emergency

Food Boxes directly, or give boxes to local care-workers to distribute.) The foodbank allows the general public to contribute to and support local well-being in a simple practical way.

13 million people live below the poverty line in the UK. Every day people in the Merthyr & Cynon Valleys will struggle to feed themselves and their families because of redundancy, illness, benefit delay, domestic violence, debt, family breakdown or simply having to pay an unexpected bill on a low income. Since 4th November 2011, over 1192 people (692 adults and 500 children) in the Merthyr & Cynon Valleys have been fed through our foodbank network. Food poverty is a reality in our town and we seek to bring the whole community to solve the problem. You can donate food to our distribution centres or to our warehouse in Gurnos Christian Centre, 26 Spruce Tree Grove, Gurnos Estate, give funds, volunteer or even hold a fundraising event. Foodbanks help prevent crime, housing loss, family breakdown and mental health problems. Some of our clients testify that if it wasn’t for foodbank they would have increased depression, the strain on their family relationship would have increased, they would have to skip meals, use a loan shark or doorstop lender and even commit a crime such as shoplifting or theft. A simple parcel of food makes a big difference. Frontline care professionals such as health visitors, district nurses, social workers (VAMT, Communities First, JOB Centres, CAB, Barnardo’s) etc., identify people in crisis and issue a food voucher. Clients receive three days of nutritionally balanced, non-perishable food in exchange for their food voucher. Our Foodbank volunteers make time to listen and signpost clients to further support.

Such an honour to be chosen by our former Mayor as one of his charities (22/23). Last Thursday we were invited to receive the cheque from his hands. Many thanks Declan, Paula and Jayne for all the events you have put into place to fundraise for us during the whole year. Your effort and hard work to raise such a generous donation will benefit many people in crisis in our communities.
We are really grateful and overwhelmed with such generosity of those who have contributed to the Mayor Charity Appeal.
It's not right that anyone should have to come to a food bank. But together we can work for a more just society where everyone is able to afford at least the essentials.
On behalf of the Merthyr Cynon Foodbank Team (trustees, staff and volunteers) a big thank you for your kindness and support. God bless you πŸ’šπŸ™

I'm almost crying. We are in Asda Dowlais Top collecting food. A gentleman has just donated a full trolley of food. He said: 'You helped me when I was in crisis in the past, now I can give back and help others'. It can happened to any one of us!! πŸ™β€οΈ

A huge thanks to Rhonda Braithwaite, Sue Patman and Stephen Phillips for organising this fundraising. Amazing achievement. Well done!! Many thanks to all those who have donated so generously. Β£1,024.76 that will help many people in crisis who come through our doors. God bless you πŸ™β€οΈπŸ˜Š

From Rhonda Braithwaite πŸ‘‡

Firstly, I want to thank Sue Patman and Stephen Phillips for supporting me to fundraise for Foodbank. This is the third year we've supported such a worthy cause. We knocked every door in the Gurnos Ward and were overwhelmed with the generosity of residents. We appreciate times are difficult and people are struggling to make ends meet. We took this into account when planning this and that's why we were only asking for a Β£1 per house and as a goodwill gesture, we gave a free strip of raffle tickets. It seemed only fair to give something back to show our appreciation.
Today the three of us met Cleide Correia at the Christian Centre and counted the donations. We had raised Β£1,024.76p and we were all over the moon.
We set a target of 200,000 steps and smashed it by doing 236,461 steps.
We had Cleidi to draw the raffle and these were the addresses of the winners
1st prize 8, Lavender Road who won the air fryer donated by Gurnos Labour Branch
2nd prize 106, Oak Road who won Β£30 which was kindly donated by Sue Patman's family in memory of their Mam Joan Williams
3rd prize 46, Bramble Close who won Β£20 donated by Gurnos Labour Branch and we congratulate the three of you.
Fundraising for Foodbank will be an annual event by the Gurnos Labour Branch but this event was also in memory of all the loved ones families in the Gurnos Ward has lost.
Thanks to everyone of you because without you, we couldn't have done it.

Many thanks to Merthyr Rotary Club for your ongoing support which is very much appreciated. Well done everyone πŸ‘πŸ‘
