The Mersey Leagues are officially leveling up! 🙂❤️♟️
What started as a popular primary school tradition…bringing teams of 8 together to compete, make new friends, and test their skills…has just made the jump to secondary schools!
Yesterday, Notre Dame Catholic College hosted the very first Secondary Mersey League "All Play All" tournament. It was a fantastic day of competition against fellow trust schools:
Blessed Carlo Acutis
SFX (St Francis Xavier's)
St Augustine’s
Huge congratulations to our hosts, Notre Dame, for taking the overall win! 🏆 We also capped the day off with a high-speed Blitz knockout round to find our star individual. A massive well done to Reegan, who was crowned Best Player!
It’s about more than just the game; it’s about new environments, learning from peers, and embracing the spirit of competition. Well done to everyone involved! 👏✨Culture LiverpoolEnglish Chess FederationMalcolm PeinMagda HamblettWhitefield Primary SchoolMaria EagleLiverpool City CouncilIan Byrne MPLaura Robertson-CollinsLiverpool BID CompanyChess in Schools and CommunitiesSt Joseph Catholic Multi Academy TrustSt Francis Xavier's College@ndca@

The Mersey Leagues are about more than just the final score. We focus on the holistic development of every participant:

It’s a vibrant, local sporting tradition where the thrill of the game meets the joy of making new friends.

We offer a structured introduction to competitive play that rewards effort, teamwork, and resilience.

Beyond the physical activity, the "fun-first" atmosphere reduces stress and builds lasting confidence in a team setting. (e.g. only top boards use clocks)

It’s a unique platform for students to meet peers from neighboring schools, fostering sportsmanship and new friendships.

Participants sharpen their strategic thinking, quick decision-making, and situational awareness under the excitement of a match.

Each school receives a perfectly appropriate chess book to add to their school library

At Merseyside academies we use Steps books.. every student works with these. Most children are taught chess by a member of the family or a friend.. sometimes they miss things out (I call these Grandad gaps) Steps books helps to make sure that every level and topic is covered completely.. no gaps, improved chess.. simple 🙂❤️♟️
