Attention all private student renters!🏡
Following the new Renters’ Rights Act that came into effect on May 1st this year, the way private tenancies work has changed. Shorthold tenancies, which you have on your student houses, have automatically become ‘rolling’ which means your tenancy may not end when you thought it does.
You now must give 2 months’ notice to end your tenancy so if you haven’t given formal notice, you could still be liable to paying rent even though you thought your tenancy was coming to an end this summer☀️
This won’t affect everyone in the same way as student accommodation rules do vary due to different landlords and agreements. If you haven’t heard anything from who your renting with, don’t assume that the tenancy ends on your originally set move-out date!
Chase your landlord/letting agency ASAP to check the status of your tenancy and make sure you cancel your tenancy if need to!
This new legislation isn’t all bad, it does give you as a renter stronger protections, like limits on rent increase and ending most ‘no-fault’ evictions.
