How safe is your home from fire?

We had an excellent talk from the Fire Service about home safety and were surprised by some of the key causes of fire injuries in the home. Here is some of what we learnt:

50% of fires start in the kitchen, so;

Don’t leave the cooker unattended
Keep the cooker clean as accumulations of fat and grease can burn
Don’t use water to put out a fat fire - GET OUT and call the the fire service
Turn off the cooker after use as it is easy to leave something on.

25% of fires are electrical;

Always register new appliances so you do not miss product safety recalls
Do not overload tumble driers and keep the filters clean
Don’t overload sockets. It is best to use fused strip adapters
Don’t put cables under carpets and rugs and check their condition.
Rechargeable batteries can explode so only charge them when you are at home and not when you are asleep

Have one fire alarm on each floor of your house and fit a carbon monoxide alarm near open fires and stoves.

How would get out of your house in an emergency? Would you have to spend time hunting for your keys? If you have modern barrel locks, fit a thumb turn on the inside of your main escape route.

If you are not sure, ask the local fire service to come and do a fire safety check.

The Melton Learning Hub. https://meltonlearninghub.org/

”The Melton Learning Hub is a charitable organisation that is committed to supporting young people throughout Leicestershire. Our mission is to improve learning opportunities for young individuals, offer support to families and children, provide youth services and to provide community transport.”

This is a place for students who cannot cope with schools or who are traumatised and provides a time out from schools for a few days per week. It provides practical training for life skills such as cooking, carpentry, gardening, animal care, etc., which helps with teaching english and maths from entry level to level 2. It also offers emotional support for students and their families.

There is also a forest school, a weekly youth club (12 years and above) and offers holiday activities.

In addition they run a community transport team and need more volunteers. So, if you can spare a little time, please contact them.
Their carpentry workshop would welcome any surplus clean timber (planed with no nails).

Our Rotary Club has given £500 to build animal accommodation.

We are dedicated to providing traditional and practical educational opportunities that improves young people’s self-esteem, self-confidence, and experience success.The Venue is our secondary centre. At the club’s recent Christmas party, held at Sysonby Knoll, a Paul Harris award was made to recognise outstanding service to Rotary and the wider community by Rotarian Tony Pick.
Amongst his many contributions Tony is the Club Almoner, Author & Fundraiser for people in need, has launched charitable projects such as the ‘Shelter Bag Project’, has supported local food banks, is organiser of Rotary “Stars” programme in local primary schools and provides ministry to people in need as well as being the Chaplain to 156th Airbourne Brigade (Arnhem) who were billeted in and around Melton during WW2.
A Paul Harris Fellow is the highest recognition a Club can bestow on a person, either inside or outside the Club. It acknowledges "Service Above Self" which that individual has offered to their community, their nation, or the world. By advancing the ideals and causes of Rotary, by demonstrating the shared purpose, objectives and mission of The Rotary Foundation to build world understanding and peace.
The picture shows Tony Pick being presented his Paul Harris Award by President Kim Kettle together with Tony’s wife Joy.
