We have grown into a nationwide organisation, with volunteers working all over the country and helping us to distribute the hens in localities as far apart as Hull, Cardiff ,Hastings, Upavon and Ashford. We value the lives of these birds and are committed rehoming them in safe, suitable homes where they can live out the rest of their natural lives. All of the hens we rehome are ex-commercial hens,
be they from Enriched Cages, Barn or Free Range. Commercially, all hens are slaughtered after about a year of laying, when their production drops below the 6 eggs a week that is required to make them commercially profitable. Their carcasses are worth very little and are usually sold for dog food, baby food or cheap processed pies etc. We rehome to a diverse range of individuals wanting hens as pets or companion animals. Hens have begun their new lives in town, city and country gardens, allotments, schools and residential care homes. We do not rehome to people wishing to trade in hens i.e. selling them on. We operate on a shoestring (i.e. no funds!) and depend on the kindness of volunteers to make our rescues possible. We ask for a donation of £2.50 per hen from people rehoming our hens - more if you can afford it, because £2.50 does not cover all our costs. We make no profit from our work, and are not always able even to refund the expenses of volunteers.
