East Berwickshire now has a great team of citizen scientists ready to monitor river health throughout the region.

On Saturday the Tweed Foundation hosted an enthusiastic group of first-time riverfly monitors on the Eye Water to receive Riverfly Partnership training from Buglife. The site scored well, and we managed to see all eight Riverfly Monitoring Initiative (RMI) groups. A great sign of river health.

A huge thank you to those who attended and to Elaine from Buglife - The Invertebrate Conservation Trust. And to Co-op (Marjory Co-op), Coldingham Brave Bayers, Splash, Fallago Environment Fund, and Riverwoods for your contributions, and everyone on social media who interacted with our posts to help spread the word.

You can find out more about what is involved on our website https://rivertweed.org.uk/tweed-foundation/guardians-of-the-tweed/riverfly-monitoring/

If you would like to join a riverfly monitoring group in Eyemouth, Reston, or elsewhere in the Eye and Tweed catchments get in-touch with Erica at [email protected]

🤝 Working in Partnership to Support the Next Generation of Anglers 🎣

What began with an excellent RHET Scottish Borders Countryside Initiative Estate Day at Field to Fork The Hirsel, where pupils from Berwickshire High School were introduced to fly casting, has grown into an incredible fly fishing journey.

With support from St Boswells, Newtown & Districts Angling Association, Kelso Angling Association, Whiteadder Angling Association and TweedStart volunteer coaches, pupils took part in a TweedStart Introduction Day at The Watch Fishery before progressing to a four week Dynamic Youth Award programme.

Building on their initial experience, the programme combined practical learning, skill development and a deeper understanding of the River Tweed.

The programme concluded with a fantastic day at Chatton Trout Fishery, where many of the pupils caught their very first trout on the fly - a memorable achievement and a fitting reward for all their hard work.

A special thank you to Miss Grant, Head of Faculty at Berwickshire High School, who went above and beyond to support the pupils and help make the project such a success.

This is a great example of what can be achieved when schools, volunteers, angling clubs and local communities work together to create meaningful opportunities for young people, helping them build confidence, learn new skills and connect with the natural environment.

This project was made possible through the generous support from the George Crawford Legacy Trust.

Himalayan balsam pulling events start next week.

Himalayan balsam is an invasive non-native species that out-competes native plant species, particularly on riverbanks. The Tweed Foundation and the Berwick and District Angling Association (BDAA) are working together thanks to funding from Crown Estate Scotland. This project will allow volunteers to start tackling Himalayan balsam plants along the Whiteadder Water, which will help protect the integrity of the riverbank.

This year we will be targeting Allanton bridge, Hutton bridge, and Bluestone ford.

Riverfly monitoring is a great way to catch early signs of pollution, monitor river health, get people outside enjoying the river environment with likeminded people, provide an opportunity for people to slowdown and learn more about what lives in our rivers. Surveys only happen, at most, once a month from April to October, so there is not a large time commitment.

Hope to see you there!

A Tweed Foundation volunteer spotlight as part of volunteer week.

Ellen: I started volunteering with the Tweed Foundation at the end of last year. I have recently gone back to university to do a biology degree and wanted to get some experience that I could relate to my studies, and the work with the Tweed Foundation seemed like the perfect opportunity for this. So far, I have had the chance to look through preserved water sample of macro invertebrates, helped with tree planting along the Upper Tweed and most recently participated in a bird dietary analysis which involved the dissections of cormorants and goosanders and then doing a bone analysis to see what the birds had been eating.

I have also joined my local Riverfly Monitoring group and hope to be able to contribute to our river’s health by studying the Riverfly population there.

I have really enjoyed the work I have got to do so far and am looking forward to the next projects.

---

Thank you Ellen! And to all our amazing volunteers for your dedicated time and support.

Funding for this volunteer programme is kindly provided by the Tweed Foundation and Fallago Environment Fund.
