Thank you to Stef Hambrook on drums and xylosynth, Andy Taylor on baritone guitar, Alex Hogg on guitar and Greg Hall on cello. A big thank you too to Pete Gough for lighting the church spectacularly.

The Phantom of the Opera with Mimima

Beneath the sewers of the Paris Opera House dwells a masked figure. He is the Phantom, a hideously disfigured composer whose dream is to turn chorus singer Christine into a diva. Lon Chaney, the “Man of a Thousand Faces”, dominates this famous adaptation of the 1910 novel. Fast-moving and exciting, this classic, silent 1925 film is a dramatic tale of obsession, kidnap, murder and revenge, beautifully tinted throughout and featuring an impressive sequence of early Technicolor as the Phantom appears at a Masked Ball.

Minima have specialised in live accompaniment to screenings of silent films since 2006. Their electrifying original score for The Phantom of the Opera captures the horror of the story, but also finds pathos, romance and humour. Drums, bass, guitar and cello strike up a thrilling relationship with the film, following the Phantom down into his subterranean nightmare world.

“Minima are one of the leading bands accompanying silent film in Europe.” (Barbican Centre, London)
“Minima’s spine-tingling music clung to each twist of the movie… spellbinding accompaniment.” (The Guardian)
“Minima turned the 1925 Phantom of the Opera into an immersive and gripping emotional experience.” (Swansea International Festival)

Some excerpts from an email received following last Thursday’s concert ‘Stars of the Future’:

I enjoyed the concert with Graham and the young musicians so much on Thursday that I wanted to let you and them know how impressed I was with the whole concert. I know all the pieces and have played them, but at my level. The Mozart Duo was brought to life by Kassia and Graham with subtle nuance and intricate weaving and they both made a lovely sound. The Beethoven was very lively and expressive with superb playing from each of the quartet members. I loved the Tchaikovsky, which was extremely impressive and very colourful with amazing intensity, and the harmonies were very clearly expressed because it was beautifully in tune. It was a really high quality performance and very exciting and emotional too. Please pass on my admiration to all the performers. I look forward to hearing them again.

Thank you and all supporters for running the concerts and giving us a wonderful experience!
