Battle of Britain Day 85th Anniversary

As I write this on 15 September, it is Battle of Britain Day, when we remember the pivotal air campaign in the summer and autumn of 1940 where the RAF successfully defended British skies from the German Luftwaffe.

On 15th September 1940 the German Luftwaffe launched a massive assault in the skies over the south east with the aim of obliterating the Royal Air Force. It was a day of heavy fighting, and the Luftwaffe suffered significant casualties. It was a decisive defeat for the Luftwaffe, and since then this date has been celebrated as ‘Battle of Britain Day’. At its zenith, the RAF had only 749 fighter aircraft available compared to 2,550 available to the Luftwaffe. It really was a battle to save Britain. Defending our skies came at a significant cost, with 544 RAF aircrew killed during the Battle of Britain. 312 RAF personnel were killed on the ground. The indomitable bulldog spirit shone through as many thousands used their skill, judgement and tenacity to safeguard their homeland. (Courtesy of the RAF Website)

Victory in Japan (VJ) Day 80th Anniversary on 15th August 2025

VJ Day marks the anniversary of 15 August 1945 when Japan announced its surrender to the Allied forces. The surrender was met with relief and celebration that after six long years the Second World War was finally over. While millions took part in parades and street parties, there was also great sadness - the human cost was enormous and many eagerly awaited the safe return of loved ones.

Over 90,000 British troops were casualties in the war against Japan - 30,000 died and 37,500 were held as prisoners of war.

For hundreds of thousands of service personnel from Britain and the Commonwealth, it would take many months to be reunited with loved ones, some of whom they hadn’t seen for more than five years.

Please look out for more on our large display boards that will again be exhibited in front of the War Memorial for the week leading up to VJ Day. We are currently researching to find more interesting and informative photos, articles and pictures to display for this.

A brief note to inform you that it is planned for the Mayfield War Memorial to be cleaned on Monday 10 March 2025 and scheduled to commence at 10.00am onwards.

An area along the kerbside, adjacent to the War Memorial, will need to be coned off to allow the Stonemason vehicles to park and commence at 10.00 am.

We ask that everyone allows the stonemason space to undertake this important work. Thank you
