Carrick Community Food Garden

Morning all on this hot, sunny Thursday.
We have just delivered a tray of surplus produce from the garden to the food pantry at the Carrick Centre- open today 12.00- 16.30. We've brought some potatoes, lettuce, beans and some herbs....

It has been pointed out that our page does not give an actual address for the garden! Sorry about that. I have changed the "details" side bar to this page and if you click on the address it takes you to a google map. It would be nice to see you all. Volunteers are there Wednesday morning if you want to see what we do, have a coffee and biscuits or just to sit in our quiet corner. Or of course you can message this page or add a comment below.

I make no apologies for including a photo of "Port Rorie" , the sea-going skiff from Dunure! Here it is on the canals of Venice as part of the - a parade of over 2,000 rowing boats of all shapes and sizes, covering 32km of canals and sea. There were also skiffs from Ayr and Maidens.
Anyway, I went as a spectator and as a result I missed two Wednesday sessions- and wow, how the garden has grown in the meantime! The lettuces in particular are looking good and the wild flowers are growing in abundance.
Yesterday we had pupils from St. Cuthbert's over for their pizza day. The forecast was not promising and we started with a quiz in the hall before coming out for an outside pizza and a tour of the garden. All the pupils did well in the quiz and showed how much they have learned from their visits to the garden.
Our herb garden is doing well too- the last photo is of Lovage. I was wondering if anyone had any old family recipes using lovage that you'd be happy to share in the comments? Thanks
Hopefully we will be harvesting soon......

Another busy two weeks since my last post and the weather has been kind
Lots of planting (peas) and sowing (courgettes and pumpkins) and weeding but it has not been all work for pupils from St Cuthbert's and Culzean primaries- some students had the opportunity to try "Nature Art" and created some colourful and imaginative landscapes from natural materials. And the odd goggle eyes....
And when the work was done there was still time for some ladybird spotting.
With this dry spell- long may it continue!- volunteers have been going up to the garden in between sessions to give the garden a good watering.... the garden is looking good and we should be getting some produce in a few weeks. Come and have a look.

Busy day at the garden last Wednesday as we had both primary students and the Recovery group on site.
The primary students helped plant some first early tatties, sowed some tomatoes and did some weeding- though discovering worms and snails caused the greatest excitement!
As you can see, the plants previously sown by the children are doing well in the poly tunnel.
Meanwhile the Recovery group did some of the heavier work- fixing the shed, laying new boarding at the back of the polytunnel and "docking"- getting rid of the docks along the bank.
Easter holidays over the next two weeks so no school children on site- this would be a good time to come and visit and chat to volunteers. There will be people on site on Wednesdays, from 10.30 to about noon, very much depending on the weather. Drop a reply here or send PM.
