Spain & Portugal 2026: Day 36/37 Leon to Gijon

After a great breakfast in our fantastic hotel in Leon we hit the road for our last run on the Ruta Via De La Plata which ends in the coastal town of GIjon.

Today was a short 85miles and 2 hours on the bike as we picked up the N630 out of Leon. initially the road was very straight however we could already see the mighty mountains of the Picos De Europa in the distance and knew it wouldn’t be straight for long.

Soon we were climbing through numerous small mountain towns and as the temperature dropped from 24 degrees down to 16 we knew we were climbing high.

Finally we reached the Pajares Mountain Pass which sits at just over 4,500 feet. The road then suddenly dropped like a stone down the other side with gradients as high as 17% the brakes were getting a serious workout. However the views to the side of us were absolutely stunning and with no vehicles behind us I slowed the bike down to a crawl and enjoyed the scenery.

Soon we were at the bottom and joined the fast but boring highway for our last section into Gijon.

We had a cracking little holiday apartment on the edge of town and we were here for two days just chilling out and enjoying the sea air. Gijon is the largest town in the Cantabria region and has a beautiful long beach in town where we saw numerous locals enjoying the sun and surf.

Our trip is coming to an end and our next stop will be our last in Spain before we board the ferry to Ireland to start our final leg home ❤️

Spain & Portugal 2026: Day 31 Cordoba to Merida for Campbell Mackinnon and Roslyn Hyndman MacKinnon .

Amazing journey and memories.

Respect guys

After an amazing 20 hours in Cordoba it was time to gear up and hit the road this time heading for Merida.

We initially rejoined the N432 from yesterday and followed it for about an hour until it was time to turn off and join the A3276. This was the first of many road changes for todays ride as we made our way North West across the beautiful Spanish Countryside.

We had almost 3 hours to ride and we did plan a halfway stop however when we arrived the Cafe was well and truly closed despite Google promising otherwise. Thankfully neither of us were in any desperate need for a comfort break so we agreed to continue onwards to Merida.

The roads throughout today were incredibly straight and made me think of the long straight roads we experienced in the USA a few years ago. The great thing about straight roads is I had a rare chance to enjoy the scenery instead of always focusing on the next crazy curve coming towards us. And what scenery it was ❤️.

As we crossed from Andalusia into the region of Extremadura the countryside looked incredible with rolling fields filled with trees, an absolutely beautiful landscape known as the dehesa.

After almost 3 hours and 140 miles non stop we arrived into the city of Merida and thankfully our hotel was very easy to navigate to.

Once Betsy was safley parked in the secure underground car park we got to our beautiful modern room and a uickly got ready to hit the town.

Merida is famous for having some of the most amazing and complete Roman sites in the whole of Europe. One of which is the Puente Romano the longest remaining Roman bridge in the world at almost 800 meters long crossing the Guadiana River so we headed for this first and what an awesome site it was.

Despite the fact that it was around 36 degrees we couldn’t resist walking across the entire bridge and back again 🤣

Suitably knackered we ended up at the Plaza Espania and enjoyed a few cold beers in the sun before making our way back to our hotel anticipating a full day of site seeing tomorrow ❤️

Spain & Portugal 2026: Day 16, Montemor o Novo to Faro via the N2

On our final day on Portugals famous N2 we woke to clear blue skies for our last 140 miles down to the end of the road in Faro and Km marker number 738.

The N2 leaving Montemor was incredibly straight and we made really good progress to our first coffee stop in Castro Verde. By this time it was hitting 24 degrees and we were definitely feeling the heat with all of our bike gear on.

After a much needed coffee we hit the road once more for our last and final leg of the N2 into Faro.

After having the straightest roads ever for most of today we got surprised by some super twisty sections as we came into the mountains of the Algarve. We also had to leave the N2 on a couple of occasions due to road closures and diversions. The N2 is a very old road and in most sections is hardly used at all due to the motorways that run alongside it. This means that it is not always that well maintained and some sections suffer badly from landslides and unstable slopes.

Finally we entered the outskirts of Faro and the traffic seemed to appear from nowhere. After having much of the road to ourselves it was a change having to watch every single angle for careless drivers, and believe me there are plenty of careless drivers in these parts 🤦‍♂️.

All too soon we approached km marker 738 which signifies the end of the famous N2. We got our pictures taken in the Templo N2 shop and bought some souvenir patches to mark the occasion.

All in all the N2 has been an amazing experience. It runs from Chaves in the north for 738kms right down the spine of Portugal. The road throws everything at you from single lane cobblestones in the numerous small Portuguese villages to 90 degree switchbacks that demand no more than 20mph and maximum concentration.
We have been at sea level and risen to over 3000 feet, we have crossed multiple rivers and traversed mountain ridges. We have seen the vineyards of the Douro region and the beautiful rolling fields of the Montado in Alentejo.
We have had some of the most technical and challenging twisty roads we have ever experienced and we have also had some of the longest and straightest roads we have seen since we did Death Valley in the USA.

Would we recommend it?
110%, any biker that truly loves touring should do this road and if they have time also add in some of the amazing roads that lead off it such as the N108 and the N222.

Would we do it again?
Probably not as there are so many other amazing road trips that we want to do before we are too old and decrepit to swing our legs over a bike.

Are we glad we did it?
Abso-bloody-lutley! We loved it and had the best time. Before this trip we hadn’t even been to Portugal, now we have seen more of the country than many Portuguese people have.
That’s why we love our road trips on two wheels and why we will do them as long as we are fit and able too.

N2 ✅ now onto Albufiera for some well earned R&R before stage two and Spains wonderful Andalusia region ❤️

A grand weekend in York for a few members. YHA is an excellent place to stay. A good time was had by all, only one hiccup when Big Innes went in a pot hole & buckled the front wheel of his bike! 😕 But it held pressure after a bit of help from a hammer!!

A few of us headed up to the Tribe Glasgow night at Lochbarr. Great night. Thanks guys.

As 2025 draws to a close and we all reflect on the year gone past and look forward to the year ahead with renewed intentions all at Hillbillies recognise that this year like many has great achievements and significant challenges for individuals, families, businesses and the wider biking communities.

We have seen poverty, illness and loss impact members and friends of us as a club.

Despite this we have seen significant funds raised by many to support our sponsored charities and have supported others in their endeavours.

As we move into 2026 we wish everyone a healthy happy new year doing what we all enjoy best. Riding bikes, helping others and having a good time in great company.

Here's to you all
