๐ŸšจRemember:

๐Ÿ’”Cardiac arrest is an electrical problem - the person will be unconscious.
๐Ÿ’”Heart attack is a circulation problem - the person will probably be conscious.

Get to recognise the difference so you know what action to take in an emergency.

120 more young people now have lifesaving skills!

The 14 and 15 yr olds at David Nieper Academy School in Alfreton recently had the opportunity to learn and practice life saving CPR when John, one of our team of volunteer Community First Responders, supported the East Midlands Ambulance Community Trainer Michelle Waters at a CPR and Defibrillator awareness demo.

Using manikins and the training defibrillator they got hands on experience during the 4 sessions of 30 pupils. That's a further 120 people who are able to perform CPR in an emergency situation of a cardiac arrest.

Thanks to the pupils and staff at David Nieper Academy School for making us feel welcome and giving these pupils the opportunity to learn this amazing lifesaving skill.

If you know of a community group which would like a CPR session please contact [email protected]

We helped 65 youngsters learn CPR and what to do in an emergency at the Matlock Farm Park emergency services day. And of course their parents, siblings, grandparents and countless others watched on.

These awareness sessions are key in an emergency, as they give people the confidence to stay and help - the 999 call handler will give loads of support so remembering everything isn't essential.

If you'd like to arrange a CPR training session for your club, group or community please contact Ralph Emmerson by email [email protected]

Thanks to the team at Matlock Farm Park for organising the day and inviting us along.

For our last training session Special Paramedic Dom showed us how as Community First Responders we can help patients with certain leg injuries while we're waiting for the ambulance.

We carry entonox for pain relief and Dom demonstrated how we can also relieve the patient's pain by manipulating and stabilising the limb.

A great hands-on session using a training dummy.

๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ’™Here's just one good reason to learn CPR๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ’™. Quick action and lifesaving chest compressions helped save Sanjay's life when he went into in cardiac arrest.

๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ’™Did you know that you could get an hour of free CPR and defibrillator training from our Community Trainer volunteers?๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ’™

If you think your community could benefit from learning this life saving skill, all you need to do is visit the EMAS website www.emas.nhs.uk/your-service/community-response-team and register your interest.

As CFRs our training doesn't end with our qualifications and we have monthly training meetings to ensure our skills are honed and kept up to date.

This month's training focused on ambulance familiarisation, or knowing where everything's kept. So why do we need to know this?

As volunteer CFRs we are sent to 999 calls by East Midlands Ambulance Service (EMAS) and generally arrive before the ambulance.

We assess the patient and administer first aid, oxygen, CPR etc as appropriate within our skill set until the crew arrives. Often that's the end of our involvement with that patient and we clear ready for the next call.

However there are occasions when we remain to assist the ambulance crew. This may be fetching kit from the ambulance or helping to move a patient or continuing CPR so the crew can administer drugs etc.

Each shift and each job is different but every time we sign on as volunteer CFRs we know we're helping our local community.
