Our gardening club team pulled out all the stops last week when the booked speaker cancelled at the last minute owing to illness. Committee members Sue Lyon and Andrew Toosey stepped in and gave us two excellent presentations.
First up was Sue who, assisted by Richard her husband and gardening partner, gave us a fascinating talk on how they are creating a wildlife oasis of a garden from what was an overgrown farmyard and cattle field. Before and after photos of their work were worthy of Gardener's World, and the badger attack on their pristine no-dig new bed was a highlight.
Andrew followed with an excellent and amusing talk on structures in a garden setting. He used a wealth of photos from recent garden visits to show how structures and statues can be used to good effect in a garden. Those who know of Andrew's love of all things railway related were not surprised to see that his garden has a number of railway signal boxes all beautifully surrounded by carefully chosen planting.
All in all, an excellent evening.
The Stoke-Sub-Hamdon Gardening Club meets on the fourth Wednesday of the month in the Memorial Hall, 7.15pm for a 7.30pm start.
