Last night’s episode of Ambulance on BBC One shone a well‑deserved spotlight on Community First Responders (CFRs) — volunteers who drop everything at a moment’s notice, heading out into the unknown to help complete strangers on what is often the worst day of their lives - No blue lights, no big ambulance, no fanfare… just commitment, compassion, and a determination to make a difference.
As CFRs, we’re often the very first on scene, sometimes arriving within minutes of a 999 call. In those critical early moments, before an ambulance crew can get there, we provide essential, life-saving care — managing airways, giving oxygen, monitoring vital signs, or delivering CPR to someone in cardiac arrest.
But beyond the clinical side, it’s the human side that really stands out. CFRs are often the first reassuring voice a patient or family member hears — the first calm presence in what can feel like absolute chaos. That ability to bring reassurance, clarity and calm is just as important as any medical intervention.
Last night’s episode also highlighted something incredibly important: What3Words. - We strongly encourage everyone to download the app. It allows 999 call handlers to pinpoint your exact location — especially vital in parks, countryside, or anywhere without a clear address.
Around our coastline there are many hard to reach places for example: if you need help while out walking, What3Words can guide crews directly to you without delay. Those few saved minutes really do matter.
If you watched Ambulance last night, you’ll know just how vital Community First Responders are — and how tools like What3Words can help us reach you faster. - Please share and help spread the word.
Thank You
