The diving team 🤿 were at Newbold Quarry recently to monitor the crayfish, 🦞 collect some water samples, download the temperature loggers 🧑‍🔬👩‍💻 and do some spring cleaning. This site has been invaded by non-native signal crayfish, which have sadly replaced the native white-clawed crayfish.

We are grateful to Rugby Borough Council and Warwickshire Wildlife Trust for permission to visit thd site.

🤿Today the team were back at a Warwickshire claypit for a litterpick in and under the water. We also downloaded our temperature logger which now has more than 43,000 hourly records!

Today we kicked off our crayfish 🦞 collaboration with University of Leicester as we collected water samples at Hill Hole Quarry for environmental DNA 🧬analysis. The divers also did a litterpick.

🦞Following surveys last summer by Project Baseline Midland Pools volunteer divers at Stoney Cove and Hill Hole Nature Reserve, endangered white-clawed crayfish have now been translocated to the University of Warwick campus to establish a new ark site.

🦞Today Martin, one of our volunteer project managers, was invited to give a talk at the annual Warwickshire Wildlife Recorders’ Meeting, which is organised by the county council’s Biological Records Centre. This followed much interest in our work at Ensor’s Pool that showed that native crayfish remain at this Special Area of Conservation site. The meeting was attended by about 80 people and we made some great contacts that will help the project flourish in 2025!
