Be Still & Know

Artists are historically loners, spending vast amounts of their lives in silence and prayerful states, the residency at Union Church has afforded me some of this solitude back.

This experience of conflict between the joys of solitude and the need for community run through LGBTQ+ artists lives particularly. We’re all struggling. We’re all navigating an unending sea of changes and identity shifts and showing up for each other feels overwhelming when we’re all being battered by the political climate.

This exhibition aims to honour the sanctity of solitude and how time alone brings us space to transform

As of April, artist Grace Saint officially began their residency in Union Church

‘I’m really focussing on using this time to try and test myself to find pockets of quiet solitude in such a loud and busy space. It’s been a real journey coming from the somber Catholic mass to such a vibrant community of Christians. I’m interested to see how the environment informs my practice, who knows I might ditch the black and blood tones for yellow, coral and sea foam!’

As part of their residency they are working on a very exciting project that is close to their heart and the work of Union Church. There will be opportunity for input from the local community, so please keep an eye out for announcements in the next few days
