Unanima at Hockley Hustle!

This year feels like a bit of a moment. Hockley Hustle is celebrating 20 years, and Unanima is marking 20 years too!

We’re hosting our debut stage at the iconic Hockley Hustle, and we’re bringing a brilliant line-up of learning disabled, autistic and neurodivergent artists, poets and performers with us.

Expect new voices, live performance, poetry, music, and a talk exploring the lore of inclusive music-making and how we create spaces where artists are properly supported.

Our stage is open to everyone, so come along, discover some incredible talent, and be part of the conversation.

A huge thank you to our venue partners, By Our Hands We Make Our Way, who’ll be hosting us for the afternoon.

Turns out Unanima is not just a drama group.

They came for the drama, then realised there was a bigger point.

Josh and Brett talk about what surprised them most about getting involved: the welcome, the friendliness, and the freedom to actually relax and be themselves.

That matters.

Because creative spaces should not make people shrink.

They should give people room to breathe, speak up, make work, make mates, and maybe cause a bit of trouble while they’re at it. 😉

This World Mental Health Day, we’re thinking about the importance of community, connection, and safe spaces for learning disabled and autistic people.

Mental health support should be accessible, respectful, and built around people properly.

Because nobody should have to struggle alone.

Not here to be quiet.

Stand-up comedy is not exactly the easy option.

You have to get up, take the mic, say what you think, and hope people laugh with you.

That’s what makes it powerful.

Our stand-up comedy training gives learning disabled and autistic people the chance to build confidence, develop their own voice, and get proper support to perform.

No pity laughs.

No “aww, bless them”.

Just comedians being funny, honest, sharp, chaotic, and completely themselves.

What people get wrong about learning disabled artists?

Quite a lot, actually.

They assume people can’t think.
Can’t learn.
Can’t create.
Can’t contribute.

Wrong on all counts.

Learning disabled artists have ideas, opinions, talent, timing, creativity, and sometimes... a computer doing a very convincing impression of them. 👀

Which, frankly, is more than most of us manage on a Monday.

Stop underestimating people.

Talent was never the problem.

The problem is access.
Opportunity.
Low expectations.

At Unanima, learning disabled and autistic artists are given the right environment, honest feedback, proper support, and space to develop.

And when that happens?

The talent comes out.

Because it was always there. ✨

Sometimes confidence looks like theatre.
Sometimes it looks like music.
Sometimes it looks like a room full of people moving, laughing, and being completely themselves.

Very serious artist development, obviously 😂
