Sherwood Forest Trust

Sherwood Forest Trust We work across the whole wide area that was once Sherwood Forest, to preserve its woodland, heathland, its nature habitats, and its local heritage.

We're a small team with a big vision, and we believe in co-operation and community. By working together smaller organisations and communities have a bigger voice, have more expertise and make better use of resources.

The Major Oak has died.

The ancient giant, the meeting place, the folklore legend, the keeper of stories. This tree has meant so many different things to so many different people.

This is news weโ€™ve all been expecting as weโ€™ve watched it coming to the end of its life, but it is no less sad now that itโ€™s confirmed and the hope of new leaves is gone.

Many of us grew up under that tree, on family walks, school trips and adventures in the forest; it has been part of our lives for as long as we can remember.

Weโ€™re reflecting on what this majestic tree has meant to us, the memories we hold, and the old photos weโ€™re looking back on.

What memories do you have? We would love to hear your stories and see your photos too. ๐Ÿ’š

๐ŸŒฑ๐ŸŒณ Take a closer look at the wild side of Sherwood for !

How many tree seeds could you recognise on your walk through the woods?

Most of us can spot an acorn, but Sherwood's trees produce an amazing variety of seeds, fruits and nuts, each with its own story to tell. Some are carried by the wind, some hitch a ride with animals, and others have evolved ingenious ways to spread across the landscape.

This June, why not try something new and discover the fascinating world of tree seeds? You'll learn how to identify different species, uncover the secrets behind their survival strategies, and find out how seeds help shape the future of our woodlands.

Taking time to notice the small things is what 30 Days Wild is all about. This guided walk is a chance to slow down, explore nature more closely, and deepen your connection with the wildlife and landscapes around you.

๐ŸŒฟโœจ Celebrate Great Big Green Week with us after dark! โœจ๐ŸŒฟ

Did you know that as daylight fades, some of our most fascinating wildlife is only just beginning to stir?

Join us THIS FRIDAY for a special evening exploring Sherwood Heath and discover the incredible creatures that call this landscape home. Listen for the churring of nightjars, watch bats dart through the twilight sky, and keep your eyes peeled for the tiny lights of glow worms hidden amongst the heathland (we did spot one last week!!).

We'll have our bat detectors and moth trap ready to hear and see wildlife up close!

Great Big Green Week is all about celebrating the nature on our doorstep and taking action to protect it for future generations. What better way to mark the occasion than by experiencing one of Nottinghamshire's most special habitats at its most magical time of day?

Last week was Volunteers' Week, and we took the opportunity to celebrate our lovely bunch and say thank you for all their hard work (after a good session on Sherwood Heath!) ๐ŸŒณ

Without these lot, we'd not get much done! Sherwood Heath and Oak Tree Heath are looking better than ever and we're seeing lots more species emerging, and our tree nursery is operating at full capacity, like a well-oiled machine!

So thank you to everyone who dedicates their time to our cause, you really do make such a difference and we love working together๐Ÿ’š

Do you see bats flying around your garden on warm summer evenings?

You might be surprised to learn that there could be more than one species visiting! The UK is home to 18 species of bat, each with its own unique habits, flying styles and favourite places to feed.

When the sun starts to set, bats emerge to hunt for insects, making gardens, woodlands and waterways important habitats for these fascinating mammals.

Want to find out more about the bats living in Sherwood and learn how to spot them?

Join us for our Nocturnal Nature Walk tomorrow, where we'll explore the forest after dark and discover the wildlife that comes alive at night. We'll have our bat detectors so we can listen to their calls!
