NIDAS Nottinghamshire Independent Domestic Abuse Services (NIDAS) We offer a family based approach for people who are living with domestic abuse now.
(1)

We are a small, friendly, independent, local charity operating across Mansfield and Ashfield in Nottinghamshire. You don’t have to want to leave the relationship but for those who do we can support you to safely leave. We also support people who have been affected by domestic abuse in the past and want to better understand their experience so they can move forward with their lives. If you need help, please know that you can contact us and we’ll be here for you.

This week marked the final session of one of our young people's groups at a local school and we wanted to share a little of what made it special. πŸ’›

Each week, the group used a "chuck it bucket" anything unhelpful, any unkind thought or worry, got screwed up on paper and thrown straight in. Simple, but powerful.

They made messages in a jar. They talked about what consent really means. They made friendship bracelets together. And every week, Denver and Obie, our weighted teddies, kindly donated by Project Peanut, sat with the group for comfort.

Here's some of what the girls told us when we asked for feedback:

"I can recognise red flags, but also green ones, which is important."
"I loved every week."
"I understand what consent really means now."
"My confidence has grown."

Every single one of them said they loved making new friends and meeting new people.

This group was run by our wonderful Donna (Young People's Violence Advisor) and Marie (Children & Young People's worker), thank you both for everything you bring to this work.

If you know a young person, or work with a school, who could benefit from a group like this, we'd love to hear from you.

What a day. πŸ’™

Today the NIDAS team attended the Safeguarding & Vulnerabilities Conference at Kings Mill Hospital β€” and we left feeling inspired, challenged, and more connected than ever to the incredible professionals doing this work across our region.

The room was full of people who care deeply. Nurses, social workers, police, charities, mental health advocates β€” all under one roof, all asking the same question: how do we do this better?

A few highlights:

πŸ”Ή Di Richardson sharing her lived experience of FGM β€” honest, brave, and deeply moving
πŸ”Ή Danny Wolstencroft (Lads Like Us): "Being trauma-informed is a way of being, not a tick box"
πŸ”Ή Detective Inspector Amy Revill on how sexual offences are progressed through the police
πŸ”Ή Chris McMinn on Andy's Man Club and the power of peer support for men's mental health
πŸ”Ή Stuart Sale from Ann Craft Trust on dignity, respect, and reducing adult abuse

The interaction from Kings Mill Hospital staff throughout the day was brilliant. This is what joined-up safeguarding looks like.

NIDAS works across Nottinghamshire to support survivors of domestic abuse and we welcome referrals from any professional. If today's conversations sparked something β€” please reach out.

πŸ’œ Volunteers' Week is the perfect opportunity to say a heartfelt thank you to our wonderful Trustees πŸ’œ

While much of their work happens behind the scenes, their support, guidance, expertise and dedication play a huge part in helping NIDAS continue supporting individuals and families affected by domestic abuse.

As our CEO, Rukhsana Ismail, beautifully said:

"Your leadership, insight and support help ensure that NIDAS can continue making a difference to the lives of those we serve."

To every Trustee past and present, thank you for everything you do. Your contribution is deeply appreciated.

We're also currently looking for a new Chair of Trustees and additional Trustees to join our Board.

If you're passionate about supporting your local community and helping shape the future of a charity making a real difference, we'd love to hear from you.

β€œWhat does freedom look like?”

That was one of the first questions explored in our recent Steps to Freedom group.

The first artwork was created at the beginning of the programme. The second was created at the end, reflecting what change, healing and freedom had come to mean for the women who took part.

Sometimes progress cannot be measured in words alone.

✨ Confidence returning ✨
✨ Feeling seen again ✨
✨ Feeling safe enough to imagine a future ✨
✨ That is what trauma-informed recovery can look like ✨

We are incredibly proud of every woman who took part in this group and grateful to for designing the that continues to support survivors across the UK.

Our next 8-week Steps to Freedom group now begins in 4th June to 23rd of July.

If you or someone you know could benefit from support around domestic abuse recovery, confidence rebuilding and understanding unhealthy relationship patterns, we encourage you to get in touch.
