“What does freedom look like?”

That was one of the first questions explored in our recent Steps to Freedom group.

The first artwork was created at the beginning of the programme. The second was created at the end, reflecting what change, healing and freedom had come to mean for the women who took part.

Sometimes progress cannot be measured in words alone.

✨ Confidence returning ✨
✨ Feeling seen again ✨
✨ Feeling safe enough to imagine a future ✨
✨ That is what trauma-informed recovery can look like ✨

We are incredibly proud of every woman who took part in this group and grateful to for designing the that continues to support survivors across the UK.

Our next 8-week Steps to Freedom group now begins in 4th June to 23rd of July.

If you or someone you know could benefit from support around domestic abuse recovery, confidence rebuilding and understanding unhealthy relationship patterns, we encourage you to get in touch.

Healing from trauma is not just about talking — it’s also about safety, connection, and helping people feel regulated and understood.

Recently our team attended a powerful Polyvagal Theory in Practice training session led by Lisa Edge from Birmingham City University.

The training helped deepen our understanding of how trauma affects the nervous system and why survivors may respond in ways linked to survival, fear, or overwhelm.

It reinforced something we believe strongly at NIDAS:
People need compassion before judgement.

We are continuing to strengthen our trauma-informed approach so survivors accessing our services feel safer, heard, and supported throughout their healing journey.

Lisa also shared her incredible Project Peanut initiative and kindly donated weighted teddies to NIDAS, which we have already started using in sessions to support comfort and emotional regulation 💜

Healing after domestic abuse takes more than time.
It takes safety, support and the right environment to rebuild confidence again.

Our Steps to Freedom programme is a trauma-informed, survivor-led recovery programme designed to support women affected by domestic abuse.

Over 10 weeks, women are supported through gentle reflective activities, shared learning and confidence rebuilding in a safe and supportive space.

We still have a few spaces remaining for women who may benefit from joining.
