St. Chadās Church, an architectural gem built in 1876 by renowned architect Joseph Paget, stands as a testament to the historical fabric of our community. However, the years have taken their toll, and the church now requires urgent restoration efforts. Fortunately, the local community has stepped up to the challenge after being granted a 99-year lease on a peppercorn rental agreement. This arrangement not only secures the future of the church but also empowers the community to take ownership of this beloved landmark.
Restoration efforts have already commenced with critical work on the roof, ensuring that the structure is secure from further damage. However, this is just the beginning. As part of the extensive restoration plan, contractors will soon address woodworm infestations and undertake necessary repointing of the walls. These steps are crucial for allowing limited openings of the church in the near future, providing opportunities for the community to reconnect with this historic site.
Once stabilised, St. Chadās is set to transform into a vibrant community space, managed by a local charity dedicated to embracing community spirit and engagement. This initiative aims not only to preserve the church as a significant aspect of our heritage but also to provide a meeting place for various community activities and events.
To achieve this ambitious plan, funds are essential. The restoration process is a costly endeavour, and it is hoped that residents will play a pivotal role in its success. Your contributions will directly aid in reinforcing this precious part of our history, allowing the community to shape its future. Every donation, no matter how small, represents a step closer to restoring St. Chadās to its former glory.
