GM Mayoral Hustings with a twist – Exclusive Invitation for Stretford Residents

Local organisations including Trafford North & South Foodbanks, the GM Citizens Assembly Campaign, Our House, the We’re Right Here campaign and Creative City are coming together to host a unique event that puts residents at the heart of the conversation about Greater Manchester’s future.

Stretford residents are warmly invited to attend this special in-person event.

The Mayor of Greater Manchester has significant powers over transport, health and social care, policing, economic strategy, planning and development. But this mayoral by-election is also an opportunity to ask a bigger question: how can ordinary people have more influence over the decisions that affect their daily lives?

Before hearing directly from the mayoral candidates, residents will come together over a shared community meal and take part in a lively, facilitated discussion exploring questions such as:
• How do we want to be involved in the decisions that affect our lives?
• What could a more participatory, people-powered democracy look like?

This event is designed to create space for local people to share food, fun, ideas, experiences, and engage with democracy together.

We popped the question

Recently, one of our supporters put the Greater Manchester Mayor on the spot. Liza Ward asked him directly: "Can we have a Citizens' Assembly for Greater Manchester?"

His answer? Despite making supportive noises, he ultimately gave a typical, non-committal politician's response. The whole exchange was on camera, and it proves what we already know: real change comes from the bottom up, not top down.
Trust in politics is at historic lows, and we need to upgrade our democracy ourselves. We need a system that puts ordinary people at the helm. Nurses, builders, and shopkeepers, selected like a jury, making decisions we can trust.
