Heart Valve Voice

Heart Valve Voice Our mission is to improve the diagnosis, treatment & management of heart valve disease by raising awareness and providing support. www.heartvalvevoice.com

Heart valve disease is a common and serious but highly treatable condition which impacts upon more than one million people over the age of 65 in the UK. The UK boasts many world-renowned experts in heart valve disease, but patients do not always get the treatment that they deserve. This may be caused by low public awareness of the symptoms of heart valve disease, meaning people sometimes assume th

at their symptoms are simply due to getting older. It may also be because GPs do not have sufficient consultation time to fully explore patient symptoms. Or it could be that in the UK heart valve disease is not being treated with the priority it deserves. Heart Valve Voice is an advocacy group formed by a partnership between patients and doctors with the aim of taking on the challenges surrounding heart valve disease diagnosis and treatment. We aim to act as a source of information and be a voice for those who suffer from heart valve disease. Since being founded in 2013, we have succeeded in putting heart valve disease on the agenda for patients, healthcare providers and national policy makers. By working for you and with you, we can transform the diagnosis, referral and treatment of heart valve disease in the UK and bring us in line with other European countries. A big thank you to @‌StuartAndrew for hosting us today in Moulton.

We’ve spoken to lots of people about heart valve disease and that it is often missed until people become seriously unwell.

Symptoms such as breathlessness, fatigue, dizziness and reduced ability to exercise are frequently dismissed as part of getting older, but recognising them early can make a real difference.

Awareness saves lives, and it’s important that people know when to seek advice and support.

11 Birthday Events - Number 8

Cycling has been featuring heavily recently in HVV, and last year was where it all started. Phill, now our Partnership and Operations Director was originally a patient, and last year as a fundraiser and to celebrate his successful recovery he made a 55 mile bike ride with his surgeon Mr Ishtiag Ahmed from London to Brighton!

Visit https://heartvalvevoice.com/our-eight-birthday-achievement/ to read all about it.

From Surgery to the Saddle When Phill Read was diagnosed with mitral valve disease, he faced a challenging road ahead. Before undergoing mitral valve repair surgery, he made a promise to his cardiac surgeon, Mr Ishtiaq Ahmed. Once he had recovered, they would take on the iconic 55-mile London to Bri...

We are delighted to share that we have now raised £3,456 towards the Brenda Walker Challenge.

If every pound raised was represented by a £1 coin laid flat edge-to-edge, we would have created a line stretching more than 80 metres – that’s almost the length of a football pitch or 16 double-decker buses parked end to end.

If you would like to take part in this wonderful memorial of Brenda, who was committed to raising awareness of heart valve disease, then please visit: https://heartvalvevoice.com/the-brenda-walker-challenge/

What an amazing awareness-raising blazing ride of glory that was! A fantastic thank you to our two two-wheeled heroes Wil and Phill.

They had sunshine, they had rain, and they reached Paris to be met by a staunch group of heart-disease survivors.

This is what we do, we bridge that space between the patient and clinician so the patient voice is HEARD and however long and hard the journey is we get there.

Read Wil’s thoughts about the ride here: https://heartvalvevoice.com/paris-ride-we-made-it/

After 250 miles from Brighton to Paris, I can honestly say this has been one of the most rewarding and emotional things I’ve ever done. What made the finish line so special wasn’t simply reaching Paris, it was seeing the patients waiting for us at the end. Patients who have experienced heart val...
