Livvy Gosney was diagnosed with heart valve disease in 2015.

After six years facing delays to treatment due to Covid, Livvy was finally called in to receive her life-saving treatment in 2021.

This is her journey through that life-changing experience and Livvy talks about her journey to treatment and documents the highs and lows of life after open-heart surgery.

We’re pleased to say that she doing really well and enjoying life with her family and keeps in touch with the charity.

Sacha Read felt quite isolated as a carer for her husband Phill, she had to look after their young daughter, hold down a job, and worry about how the mortgage would be paid. Luckily strong family support and an open and talkative attitude helped her to get through the hardest parts. You can read her full story here:

On Saturday 18th of July, our patient advocate James Charlton took on the extreme challenge of the Eiger Panorama ultra trail run in Switzerland. This incredible challenge took place in the heat, cold, rain, hail and fog of the Swiss Mountains, and involved running for over 10 hours!

Phill visited James earlier this week in Southampton to thank him personally for his support and efforts, and to discuss how we can do more together in the future.

Here is the 10th post in our 11 events for our 11th Birthday. We look back at when Heart Valve Voice had the privilege of taking Adam Jogee MP to witness a Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) procedure, at Stoke Hospital with Dr Karim Ratib, offering a unique insight into the life-changing care available for people living with heart valve disease.

Seeing first-hand the expertise, innovation, and teamwork involved in TAVI highlighted the importance of early diagnosis, timely treatment, and ensuring every patient has access to the care they need. Experiences like these help raise awareness of heart valve disease to the policy makers and the incredible difference modern treatments can make.

Thank you to everyone who made this visit possible and for continuing to put patients at the heart of everything you do.

Heart Valve Voice Welcomes National Rollout of (RAVA)

Heart Valve Voice is proud to have helped shape the pathway through a series of patient workshops, ensuring lived experience was at the heart of its design.

The new NHS report shows that RAVA is reducing delays, improving access to specialist valve clinics and helping patients receive faster assessment following an echocardiogram.

For years, we’ve called for accelerated pathways and better access to echocardiography through our Government Affairs Strategy. We believe RAVA is an outstanding example of best practice and are urging Government to embed pathways like this within the forthcoming Cardiovascular Disease Modern Service Framework.

We're so pleased that the latest publication of the Cardiovascular Disease Modern Service Framework has recognised heart valve disease within the Government’s strategic vision for cardiovascular care, including a commitment to improve access to aortic valve interventions.

For Heart Valve Voice, this reflects months of intensive advocacy. We’ve engaged with MPs, ministers, NHS England, clinicians and policymakers, submitted evidence throughout the consultation process and consistently ensured that the patient's voice was heard.

The Framework’s 12 immediate priorities focus primarily on prevention, earlier diagnosis and better management of cardiovascular risk factors, rather than individual diseases. Against that backdrop, it’s encouraging to see heart valve disease recognised and access to aortic valve interventions identified as a national priority for improvement.

Many of the ambitions within the Framework mirror what we’ve been championing for years: earlier diagnosis, faster referral pathways, neighbourhood diagnostics, reducing unwarranted variation and accelerating access to innovative treatments.

Now the focus must turn to implementation.

Heart Valve Voice looks forward to continuing to work with the Government, NHS England, the Department of Health, clinicians and parliamentarians to ensure these ambitions translate into better outcomes for the 1.5 million people living with heart valve disease in the UK.

Even though he had been a GP, Lyn did not recognise the symptoms of aortic stenosis in himself, and thought he was just ageing. When an investigation for something else revealed he had advanced heart disease he was initially very worried, but nowadays barely remembers he even had a procedure. All men when they reach the age of 65 are invited to be scanned for an abdominal aortic aneurysm. I don't know why they aren’t checked for aortic stenosis at the same time.
