New research from the EASY-AS trial is shining a light on an important question: How do patients feel about being offered treatment for severe aortic stenosis before they develop symptoms?

Four new illustrated storyboards from the EASY-AS patient experience sub-study explore the different thoughts, emotions and questions people with severe aortic stenosis can face when making decisions about treatment.

Today is World Heart Day! ❤️

At Heart Valve Voice, we’re using today to remind everyone of the importance of looking after your heart and knowing the signs of heart valve disease. Heart valve disease can affect people of all ages, but becomes more common as we get older. Symptoms such as breathlessness, dizziness or fatigue shouldn’t simply be put down to ageing. Listening to your heart and seeking medical advice when something doesn’t feel right can make a real difference.

“My heart attack came as a total surprise to me. I was away on holiday and travelling by myself and I woke up one morning and couldn’t breathe. I had no idea what was wrong. I had no chest pains or anything that made me think it could be my heart, but I felt terrible. I wanted to be sick and to void my bladder and bowels as if that would help. I felt like I was dying, and of course I actually was, but the first time I understood that it was my heart was when the nurse at the medical station gave me an ECG and I saw his face change as he saw the readout and he grabbed the printout and RAN to the doctor with it,” Graeme Wilkinson starts his TAVI story.

During this year’s Heart Valve Disease Awareness Week, we shared important information about the signs and symptoms of heart valve disease, patient experiences, and the importance of having your heart listened to.

We also proudly launched the Heart Valve Voice Patient Academy, helping people affected by heart valve disease build the knowledge, confidence and skills to become powerful advocates for change.

190 miles in memory of a dear friend 💙

Last week, after 12 days and 190 miles, Muntzer Mughal has completed the Coast to Coast walk in memory of his dear friend Colin.

Muntzer carried two pebbles from the Irish Sea at St Bees – one for himself and one for Colin – before placing them in the North Sea at Robin Hood’s Bay alongside Colin’s widow Themis.

The challenge celebrated Colin’s life and the additional years he enjoyed following successful heart valve treatment, while raising vital awareness of heart valve disease.

Muntzer also smashed his £3,500 fundraising target, raising more than £4,000 for Heart Valve Voice! Huge congratulations to Muntzer, and thank you to everyone who supported this special journey. Yesterday, Heart Valve Disease Awareness Week came to an end, and we want to say a huge thank you to everyone who helped us raise awareness and get people talking about heart valve disease. Whether you shared our posts, told your story, spoke to friends and family, attended an event, or took the time to learn more about heart valve disease, every action helped spread the word.

A special thank you to our patients, supporters, healthcare professionals, partners and everyone who used their voice throughout the week. Together, we’re helping more people recognise the signs and symptoms of heart valve disease and understand the importance of getting their heart checked.

Awareness Week may be over for another year, but our work continues. We’ll keep raising awareness, supporting patients and making sure the voices of people affected by heart valve disease are heard.

Early detection of heart valve disease is important because it could save your life.

Know the symptoms:
- Breathlessness
- Dizziness
- Fatigue

Heart valve disease can affect anyone. It can be congenital or acquired - in part related to ageing - but it can also affect younger people, for example, in countries with a prevalence of rheumatic heart disease.
