We're hiring: Wheel Throwing Tutor 🏺

Seven Limes Pottery has been running for 27 years and is Manchester's first community pottery studio. We're looking for a tutor to join us.

Who we're after: Someone excellent at throwing and centring. You might be an experienced tutor, or a strong thrower who wants support learning to teach well. We'll train the right person.

The role: Teaching taster classes, courses and weekend workshops.

Hours: Tuesday evenings 4.30pm-10pm and some weekend days to be discussed, with room to grow. It fits well alongside your own ceramics practice. Casual and long-term applicants are both welcome

Pay: Competitive, based on experience.

Where: Our railway-arch studio at 85 North Western Street, Manchester M12 6DY. It's about 10 minutes' walk from Piccadilly, with free street parking.

So great to hear when new potters tell us about their experience taking a throwing class with us in Manchester, trying out the craft for the first time.

Daisy's words: Absolutely worth the price. She recommends it to anyone wanting to try something wholesome alone or with a friend.

She booked it as a birthday surprise for her fiance. Neither of them had ever done pottery before. That's the beauty of the taster class. You don't need experience. You just need to turn up and try it out.

Daisy said Sam was brilliant, knowledgeable and properly good at teaching, not just doing it.

She also loved learning the science behind each step.

Small class sizes in a spacious studio meant it felt intimate rather than a big group getting in each others way. Proper time, proper attention.

A birthday gift, a date, a Saturday morning to yourself, free from a screen and using your hands. All good reasons to try a pottery class.

Seven Limes Pottery, Who are We? We're a family pottery studio running for over 27 years in Manchester, originally setup by my mum Wendy, and now run by me Sam Andrew. 



Mum studied pottery over 50 years ago under the leading potters of their generation, including Emmanuel Cooper OBE (founder of ceramics review, professor at Royal College of Art, and with work in the Victoria & Albert Museum). She trained as a teacher, taught in colleges and schools around Manchester. She even taught me, and my friends, when we were kids, and many others too.

Seven Limes started from a small garage behind a large seven tree trunk lime tree, that's what gave it its name.

I on the other hand, spent many years away from Manchester, building a career of my own. When I came back to Manchester I thought it would be a fleeting visit, and I'd move back to London or abroad

Yet, once I sat back at the wheel again I was hooked. I really enjoyed the studio environment and all the people there interested in this fascinating material. Learning draws you out of your mind and into the moment. It was a fresh change from working in research offices and sitting behind a computer.

So I changed career. Now it's 13 years later, and I don't regret it.

Now? We teach pottery classes in Manchester right from the beginning: skilled friendly tutors, high standards, with supportive tuition and a real focus on good craftsmanship. 

It's not just about making a pot. We want you to make something you'll be proud of, and that's why we prioritise creative exploration, skill development, and time to enjoy the process. You'll catch a mental break (it has that effect), meet new people, and make some nice things along the way.

Thinking about trying pottery making?



Try it out first in a one-off taster class, great as a solo activity, with friends, a date or even a little party.

✳️Try out the wheel, get your hands dirty, and see if you can control this spinning mud. This is a challenging class guided by a very kind expert. It's what everyone wants to try first, have you tried it yet?

✳️A hand-building taster class. Imagine making your own mug, a handmade, characterful vessel that represents a relaxed break in the day, a morning ritual, or time to chat with a friend. An object that you use everyday that's by your own hands, why not?

✳️Lastly our regular taster that offers you the best of both worlds, throw a pot and creatively hand-build too. You'll come away 2 pieces and some creative clay techniques.

OR if you know you're going to love making pottery, dive right into a weekly course.

1. ✳️We run an 18 week foundation course covering all the basic aspects of throwing and hand-building pottery making, making a great skill based to build upon. These are conveniently divided into 6 week blocks covering different techniques so you can try it out without committing to the full course.✳️

2. ✳️We have some throwing only courses for anyone wanting to try it out in a 4 weeker, improve on their basic skills in a 6 weeker, OR get centring more consistently and attempt more advanced forms like lomen squeezers, plates and oven dishes in our 12 weeker. In all the courses you'll learn to turn your pieces, and glaze them in our beautiful house glazes. ✳️

We recommend 1 then 2, but you can really start anywhere.

We're looking for our next wheel throwing tutor! Join our now 26 year old pottery teaching studio.

Must be experienced with a minimum 1 year teaching wheel throwing, have a track record of producing wheel thrown pottery or wheel based art, have a ceramics degree or equivalent training/self-study at a reputable pottery or University course, and be looking for a long-term teaching position at a thriving community studio.
