EMERGE Touch Wood

02/10/2026

We were thrilled to attend the Spirit of Manchester Awards last night along with our colleagues and volunteers from Touch Wood & FareShare Greater Manchester.

It was a truly inspirational evening of celebration arranged by Community Central to recognise the amazing work being doing in the VCFSE sector across our city.

Huge congratulations to all the winners and those shortlisted for awards (we were finalists in the Volunteer Involving Organisation alongside our FareShare Greater Manchester colleagues).

Thank you to MACC for a wonderful evening celebrating all the good things which are happening at a grass roots level in our city!

♻ Recycling Week is a great reminder that small actions can have a big impact.

At Touch Wood, we're proud to say that our small actions add up to something extraordinary:
♻ Every piece of wood we rescue finds a new purpose
♻ Every project we support helps strengthen our community
♻ Every plank repurposed reduces the strain on our planet

The wood we collect is reused, repurposed or recycled. By working together businesses, communities and individuals can create real change.

🚴‍♀️ A little piece of Manchester cycling history has found a new home on Deansgate!

We’re thrilled to have been involved in this fantastic new green installation in the heart of Manchester.

Touch Wood has created a series of bespoke Manchester bee themed hexagon-shaped planters using reclaimed wood rescued from Manchester’s historic Velodrome track. Look closely and you can still see the original painted track lines and markings in the timber!

🌿The planters are now helping to bring more greenery and biodiversity to Deansgate, alongside 12 sweet gum trees, new planting and cycle ports. And with the Tour de France Femmes coming to Deansgate next year, it’s rather fitting that a piece of Manchester’s cycling heritage is helping to create a greener city for the future.

Find out more about the project and the story behind the wood on our website: https://www.touchwood.org.uk/from-velodrome-to-deansgate-giving-manchesters-cycling-heritage-new-life/

Hand crafted by Declan, one of our talented Touch Wood team members, the base has been created with MDF with a reclaimed scaffold board top.

We are confident it will look fantastic in its new home!

🌱 What makes an allotment special?

During National Allotments Week, we've been celebrating everything that makes these spaces so much more than somewhere to grow a few vegetables.

They're places to grow food, support wildlife, get creative, spend time outdoors and bring people together.

♻️ And reclaimed wood can play a part in all of it.

From raised planters and rustic edging to wildlife-friendly features, reclaimed timber can be transformed into something practical, beautiful and useful.

And, of course, allotments aren't just for the grown-ups!

We love creating mud kitchens from reclaimed wood, giving perfectly good timber a new lease of life while creating a space for children to get outdoors, get their hands dirty and let their imaginations run wild.

Because that's what we love about reclaimed wood. It's not simply about keeping materials out of the waste stream — it's about seeing their potential and giving them a new purpose.

🥕A planter can help grow food.
🐝A bug hotel can support wildlife.
🌿A mud kitchen can inspire hours of imaginative play.

Small changes. Big impact. And lots of character.

As National Allotments Week comes to a close, we're celebrating the people who grow, create, learn, play and share in these wonderful spaces.

🌱 What would you add to your dream allotment?

14/08/2026

🌱 Allotments aren't just for the grown-ups!

There’s something pretty special about watching children get stuck into the great outdoors - getting their hands dirty, exploring, creating and, of course, making a lot of mud!

🌿So why not give the little ones their own space to get creative?

This brilliant mud kitchen was handcrafted by Touch Wood using reclaimed timber, giving old wood a new purpose while creating a space for hours of outdoor imaginative play.

Because an allotment can be so much more than somewhere to grow vegetables. It can be a place to learn, explore, play and make memories together.

😂And let's be honest... who doesn't love a good mud pie?

Could your allotment do with a little reclaimed wood glow-up?

13/08/2026

♻️ Every great allotment has its hardworking corner.

Whether it's compost storage, log storage or simply keeping your tools organised, reclaimed timber can add character while keeping useful materials in circulation.

It's proof that sustainability isn't just about what you grow - it's about what you build with too.
