This Volunteers' Week, we're celebrating the fantastic volunteers from Intact Insurance who are helping young people at GMYN build confidence, skills and aspirations through our Building Aspirations programme.

Delivered in partnership with UK Youth, the programme supports young people aged 18–24 who are not in education, employment or training, or are at risk of becoming so.

By sharing their time, experience and encouragement, Intact volunteers help young people take positive steps towards employment and brighter futures.

Thank you to all the volunteers making a difference – your support is invaluable.

Going the extra mile for young people

A huge thank you to everyone who took part in this year’s Great Manchester Run in support of GMYN 💙

This year, an incredible team of 20 runners – including supporters, staff, young people, friends and corporate partners – laced up their trainers to raise vital funds and awareness.

👏 Special shoutouts to:

💼 N Brown colleagues, who raised an amazing £1,243

⭐ Hattie Craig (Weightmans), who raised £333

💪 Myrtle Finley, GMYN’s Work Readiness Programme Manager, who smashed her personal best while raising £285

✨ Faisal-Al Raisi, GMYN’s Programme Coordinator, who stood in for a young person on the day and ran under 1 hour.

Every pound raised helps us continue supporting young people across Greater Manchester to build confidence, access opportunities, and shape their own futures.

From everyone at GMYN – thank you to our runners, donors, and cheer squads. Together, you’ve shown the power of community and determination. The money raised will help us to continue our vital work with young people 💥

✨ Cheering on our incredible young people! ✨

This Sunday, 31st May, our amazing Beeing Together young people will be taking on the AJ Bell Great Manchester Run—running both the 10k and half marathon—to raise money for GMYN 💥🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️

Our Beeing together Project supports Separated and Unaccompanied Young People across Greater Manchester to develop connections, build confidence and learn new skills. This will be their second year running for GMYN.

We couldn’t be prouder of the dedication, courage, and hard work they’ve put into this challenge. We can’t wait to cheer them on Sunday, 31st May! 🙌

We also have one of our amazing staff members running for GMYN, Myrtle! We wish her and all the young people the very best this Sunday

If you’re able to, please support them in reaching their fundraising target by donating here:

GMYN's exciting new partnership with aiming to reduce the number of nerurodivergent young people falling foul of the criminal justice system. We can't wait to see how the programme gets on. Big thank you to Ollie's Solicitors for making this happen

💙 Celebrating 3 incredible years in Bolton 💙

GMYN’s Bolton Care Experienced Project has officially come to an end after 3 amazing years.

During this time, we’ve worked with over 120 young people, supporting them with their career paths, building confidence, wellbeing, and creating opportunities to try new things.

From weekly football sessions ⚽ to unforgettable experiences like kayaking, gorge walking, walks with the Woodland Trust, and volunteering at local projects including Beechcroft Allotment, Men’s Shed and Red Lane Growing Project 🌱 — it’s been an inspiring journey every step of the way.

We have absolutely loved working with such an incredible group of young people and couldn’t be prouder of everything they’ve achieved 💪✨

Special thank you to the Bolton Council Leaving Care Service for their support throughout this programme.

To celebrate the end of the programme, the hard work and lots of memories we celebrated with a fun trip to the bowling alley. 🎳

GMYN proudly partnered with the Rio Ferdinand Foundation to host an exciting 5-a-side football tournament for care-experienced young people from across Greater Manchester. ⚽

Thanks to , who work alongside the Foundation, players were kitted out in incredible football kits – something many of the young people had always wanted… and got to keep! 🙌

In the lead-up to the event, care leavers from Bolton had been working with the Rio Ferdinand Foundation for six weeks to achieve their Level 1 Sports Leadership Qualification – a fantastic achievement 💪🎓

The tournament brought together young people from Oldham, Stockport, Manchester, Salford and Bolton for a brilliant day of football, connection and fun.

It was a fantastic day enjoyed by everyone involved, showing the power of bringing young people together and highlighting the importance of teamwork both on and off the pitch. 🤝⚽

Special thank you to our lovely who took the amazing photos 📷

✨ The highlight of the holidays for our Cared-for Oldham and Bury young people was an exciting visit to the Escape Rooms, kindly hosted by ✨

The young people split into two teams for a race against the clock, working together to crack puzzles and solve clues to escape the rooms. Along the way, they built teamwork, communication, and problem‑solving skills, all while having loads of fun!

💬 One young person shared: “This was so much fun — can we please come again?”

💬 Another added: “That was really funny and fun… hopefully next time we can get out on time!”

A huge thank you to Escape Hunt Manchester for hosting us — we hope to visit again very soon! 💙

For Mental Health Awareness Week, GMYN’s delivery team delivered a range of activities focused on mental health across their sessions, from our cared for children in Oldham and Bury, to separated young people in Stockport 💛

In Oldham, our cared for children enjoyed the sunshine with a trip to the local park — climbing trees, spending time together, and having open conversations about school, wellbeing, and the pressures young people can face 🌳

In Stockport, a group of separated young people got stuck into a spot of gardening, helping to build garden beds with support from Gemma at Eat Well 🌱🛠️ (look out for our future post regarding this project and how they got on with the garden beds!)

On our Building Aspirations project, young people explored the “5 Ways to Wellbeing”, helping to break the ice and encourage positive habits, while our Beeing Together group discussed how staying active through sport can boost wellbeing and mental health 🏃‍♀️⚽

At GMYN, we prioritize young people’s wellbeing and create safe, supportive spaces to talk, connect, and be heard — because we know there’s no one way to talk about mental health

"Out here, I feel like my mind is free".

The Beeing Together group recently returned from an unforgettable week-long residential at Ullswater, supporting 24 separated asylum-seeking young people aged 16–20 to build confidence, resilience, and friendships. They swapped the hustle and bustle of city life in Manchester for peace and quiet, even learning to spend a few hours without their beloved Wi-Fi.

As a much needed break from navigating complex asylum systems and care systems, our young people were afforded the opportunity to relax, to play, and have fun. They participated in a range of activities tailored to their wants and needs, from hiking and canoeing to climbing, gorge walking, cliff jumping, and swimming in the freezing cold lake! Every challenge was met with courage and compassion from one another. It was incredible to see the group lift each other up, overcoming fears and trying things they never thought possible.

Altraifi, 19, said: "I was so scared to jump from the cliff. So scared. But everyone supported me and cheered me and I knew I had to do it. It was amazing!"

Each young person will cherish this memory forever, which would not have been possible without Niamh from Sigma Capital, who fully sponsored this trip. Thank you for making this experience possible and for getting fully involved in every activity alongside the young people!

A huge thank you also to Outward Bound for providing a safe space for our young people to take risks and learn more about themselves and each other. We are all eternally grateful!
