Omega Research Foundation

Omega Research Foundation Protect human rights & prevent torture. Researching manufacture, trade, & use of weapons & equipment.

Omega is a UK-based NGO researching the impact on human rights of international transfers of Military, Security and Police (MSP) technologies, ranging from small arms and light weapons to large weapons systems, policing technologies, equipment used for torture, and the security infrastructure of repressive states. Omega’s work exposes how inadequate controls on the MSP trade help facilitate human

rights violations; fuel conflict and regional instability; and undermine security and sustainable development. We advocate for tougher controls on this trade and their effective implementation by Governments worldwide and develop policy guidance for appropriate use of equipment.

📢 Peaceful protests worldwide are increasingly met with excessive force and the misuse of police weapons that silence dissent and cause serious harm.

To support those documenting and challenging these abuses, we’ve launched our ‘Guidance Note on Addressing the Misuse of Police Weapons in Protests’ — now available in English, French, Spanish, and Arabic.

🎥 This video explores how the guide helps monitors and human rights organisations:
🔹 Identify commonly used police weapons and equipment
🔹 Document misuse safely and effectively
🔹 Understand relevant legal standards
🔹 Turn evidence into accountability

Designed for civil society organisations, National Human Rights Institutions, National Preventive Mechanisms, healthcare professionals, and protest monitors, the guide is a practical tool to help protect the right to peaceful assembly.

🌍 Access the guide in multiple languages and help strengthen monitoring and accountability efforts worldwide.

📣 We join other members of the civil society Network in welcoming the publication by the UN Special Rapporteur on Torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment, Alice Edwards, of her Recommendations for a Torture-Free Trade Treaty.

🪧 This paper comes at a time when the global market for law enforcement equipment is growing and cases of misuse of this equipment – in protest, on the streets, in places of detention and elsewhere – continue to be documented worldwide.

🤝 It is International Week of the Disappeared. Together with human rights organisations from around the world, we call on the Government of Bangladesh to ensure truth, justice, and reparation for victims of enforced disappearances and their families.

Among our list of recommendations, we call on the Government of Bangladesh to:
➡️ Enact comprehensive legislation criminalising enforced disappearance
➡️ Ensure access to justice and comprehensive reparation
➡️ Provide legal recognition of the status of missing persons and protection to victims’ families
➡️ Withdraw all fabricated cases against victims of enforced disappearance and release those wrongfully detained
