FareShare Greater Manchester

FareShare Greater Manchester Over 4 million people in the UK live in food poverty, lacking access to healthy affordable food. Our industry partners donate food, money and time.

FareShare Greater Manchester fights hunger and tackles food waste by distributing tonnes of surplus food to over 250 frontline charities, community organisations and schools in the region. At the same time the UK throws away 8.3 million tonnes of good food every year. FareShare stops food being wasted and gets it to where it is needed. We distribute to over 200 Community Food Members and new organ

isations are joining all the time. Our Community Food Members provide vitally needed meals, food parcels and snacks to hundreds of disadvantaged people every day. They work with a huge variety of people dealing with hardship, people who are homeless, unemployed, people dealing with substance abuse, the elderly, children and families, young adults, refugees and asylum-seekers at drop-ins, residential centres, SureStart centres, and breakfast and after-school clubs. FareShare Greater Manchester is managed by EMERGE www.emergemanchester.co.uk in partnership with FareShare UK. Every year our food donors deliver over 700 tonnes of fresh, frozen and long-life food to our depot at New Smithfield Market in East Manchester. We receive a wide range of food - bread, meat, vegetables, cans, ready-made meals, dairy products, and drinks - we never know exactly what we'll get each week. Some donors deliver every working day, others once or twice a week, others, a few times a year. We also 'capture' surplus edible food from the market every day and quality control it by hand. Staff together with a large team of volunteers deal with the deliveries and store the food in the warehouse. The food is then matched with the needs of our community food members, and delivered. Our aim is to make sure that everything delivered to us by our food donors finds a home. None of this would be possible without the generous donations of industry sponsors and charitable trusts. Our industry sponsors organise fund-raising events and give money, staff-time, and even equipment. We keep our costs low by running the service efficiently, but in order to expand the number of people we help we always need more support.

⭐One week on from Volunteers' Week, we're reflecting on the incredible people who make FareShare Greater Manchester what it is.

Last week, we shared the inspiring stories of individual volunteers, recognised the contribution of our wider volunteer team, and said thank you to them all with a daily hot breakfast and a barbecue to round off the week.

Every volunteer plays a vital role in helping us redistribute good-to-eat surplus food across Greater Manchester, supporting charities, community groups and the people they serve.

Read our Volunteers' Week reflection and join us in thanking the amazing individuals behind our work. 💚

💚 Last year, FareShare Greater Manchester redistributed 2,265 tonnes of surplus food, enough for 5.35 million meals, supporting 290 charities and community groups across Greater Manchester.

♻️By rescuing good-to-eat food that might otherwise go to waste, together we’re helping people, strengthening communities, and protecting the planet at the same time.

🍏 Thank you to every volunteer, supporter, food partner and community group helping make this possible.

⭐This Volunteers' Week, we have been saying a huge thank you to all of our brilliant volunteers for the fantastic work they do year-round.

⭐Today, we thought we’d share a few words of thanks which have come from our Community Food Members – the charities and organisations across Greater Manchester and beyond who receive the surplus food we redistribute.

⭐We simply couldn’t do what we do without our super volunteers and the impact of their work is felt far and wide.

⭐Thank you to everyone who helps us do what we do – you are all super stars!

⭐A chance visit to FareShare Greater Manchester changed Tom's future.

What started as accompanying his mum to a volunteer induction turned into an opportunity to gain new skills, build confidence and take the first steps towards a career in hospitality.

Now, after volunteering in our warehouse and supporting our Vegelicious cookery programme, Tom has secured a role as a Kitchen Porter at prestigious city centre hotel.

This Volunteers' Week, we're celebrating the incredible impact volunteers make – not only in their communities, but in their own lives too.
