After a particularly busy couple of months here at Westcroft it’s time to return to the final few stories of just some of the people that have made Westcroft somewhere to be really proud of, marking the 10-year anniversary of the charity.
This week we introduce you to Helen Finch.
As with so many of the volunteers that have supported us over the years Helens first real involvement was her kind offer of support after popping by the centre for the first time in 2021. We were short of help with deliveries for the Quid’s In service and Helen offered to step in to help, immediately taking on the role of weekly deliveries and visits to Fareshare for our top up collections.
Helen had been out of employment for a couple of years and had been struggling with her mental well-being and the impact of this on her confidence. Helen came to us with a wealth of knowledge and experience and slowly, with appropriate support, a supportive environment and most of all her drive and determination, it was no surprise to see Helen achieve her goals in life.
Helen embraced the role of leading on the delivery of our weekly Eat, Meet and Greet session, creating a relaxed, informal and welcoming environment where all who attended the weekly session felt welcome and engaged.
In 2023 a position became available with us in a part-time sessional role and it was great to see Helen take on this position with the same commitment and creativity that she had demonstrated over the past couple of years.
As funding for the role sadly came to an end in 2024 it was no surprise to see Helen continue in her personal development and in 2025 she was successful in gaining employment with the Burnage foodbank. A role that she continues in today, still supporting her community, still looking for new ways to support others and still going above and beyond. Helen remains a part of the team here, supporting as and when she can and even finds the time to volunteer every Wednesday in delivering the other Quid’s In food club in Burnage, from Burnage Sure Start.
A real credit to the Burnage community and a big part in our continuous development and our recovery after a difficult time as we re-established services after Covid. We hope she is as proud of herself as we are of her.
