Acting on Impulse

Acting on Impulse Manchester charity, empowering people who are marginalised through acting workshops and film That is our vision. Giving invisible people a profile and a voice.

Picture a group of people who are used to being looked down on and marginalised by society. They all come from different beliefs and different cultures, but they have one thing in common: they all know what it’s like to be homeless. Now picture the same folk, smartly dressed, smiling and taking a bow in front of a big screen. The audience rises to their feet in a standing ovation, filled with a fr

esh understanding of the issues faced by the homeless. The actors leave the stage with new self-esteem, justifiably proud of what they have achieved together.

Loving IN THE PALACE International Short Film Festival, we’ve watched hours of excellent documentaries, animations and short films, such high quality.
Lauren and Gavin did a Q&A about The Making of Us this morning, and the film was screened this afternoon. The audience were very appreciative, some lovely comments made to us after. Wish all our actors could have come on stage and taken the traditional bow.

This week we'll be saying goodbye to one of our actors, Ben Morris, who passed away at St Anne's Hospice on 26th March.
Ben's love of acting began in junior school. He joined our company of actors in 2014, and featured in 6 of our films. He brought great energy, creativity and enthusiasm to our workshops and worked hard to create unforgettable characters. He was sensitive, thoughtful and kind and had a strong Christian faith. We salute him as an actor and as a beautiful human being. We'll miss you Ben.
If you'd like to watch Ben's films, you can see them on our YouTube Channel. The names of the films are given below.

What a thrill to see our documentary being screened at Soho LIFF yesterday! It was among 5 other stunning films, such a high standard and such a passionate festival, loving it. Lauren and Gavin Douglas Stewart were surprised to be invited to join the panel at the end. Some heartfelt and appreciative feedback and a few tears were shed by audience members.
We’ll be back on Sunday for the Award Ceremony.

Part 3 of our news!
Next week, we'll be London bound, for the Soho LIFF, the Soho London International Film Festival, 'an annual shorts film festival that illuminates impactful stories and diverse narratives, turning up the volume on voices that need to be heard.'
What an honour to be nominated for Best Documentary AND Best Social Impact Film. We'll report from the screening on Thursday 23rd January, and the Award Ceremony on Sunday.
Super proud of our actors and of our filmmakers Lauren and Gavin Douglas Stewart.

Extract: Filmed over several months, the documentary follows the participants as they navigate the charity’s final year, from workshops to a professional film premiere. Gavin and Lauren's dedication shines through as they balance the emotional weight of the charity's closure with the technical demands of filmmaking. With professional editing, sound, and visuals, the film not only celebrates the participants' achievements but also poses critical questions about the role of the arts in society. Can creativity be a necessity rather than a luxury, especially during times of hardship?

What an exciting journey our documentary THE MAKING OF US has been on!
Part 1
In November we were so honoured to receive a Social Impact Award from the Activists Without Borders Film Festival in Manchester. This year, the festival attracted 135 submissions from 35 countries, presenting films that tackle injustices and advocate for transformative change.
Congratulation to Lauren and Gavin Douglas Stewart, our inspired film makers!

We had the best time at the Wythenshawe premiere of . Delighted to see Mike, one of our past actors, welcoming us at the door, and playing such a powerful part in the film. Loved the film itself, made over 2 years by Mike Peacock and Becky Peacock, plus the brilliant little zombie film made with Wythenshawe Scouts. Community film making at its best.
We wish them every success. More premieres in the pipeline so you can glam up and see it yourself. See the post below for details of the next one.

Highly recommended, a great movie night out celebrating the lovingly made community film The Silver Screen Dreams Café.
