The Christie was the first hospital in the world to introduce a service to support the growing number of people living with cancer.

The supportive oncology team provides all-encompassing care, including psychological support, pain and symptom management, dietary advice, occupational therapy, and end-of-life care.

Following the launch of the government's National Cancer Plan, Professor Richard Berman, the head of the service, spoke to BBC Radio 5 live about how important this is.

"By 2040, over five million people in the UK will be living with cancer. Supportive oncology has been developed as a response to that. It's a specialty that brings in different experts to help people deal with the side effects of both their disease and treatment. The aim is always to help patients live the best lives they can, whether they can be cured of their cancer or not," he says.

Did you hear Dr Sacha Howell on BBC Radio 4 this morning? 📻 Listen online now 👇

The programme discussed whether routine mammograms should start younger, and whether screening should happen more frequently.

Dr Howell shared his perspective and spoke about how this links to BCAN-RAY, The Christie NHS Foundation Trust’s Breast Cancer Risk Assessment in Younger Women research project, which aims to identify those at higher risk of developing breast cancer.

BCAN-RAY was launched following Girls Aloud singer, model and actress Sarah Harding’s dying wish to find new ways to spot breast cancer earlier and stop it cutting lives short. Thanks to The Christie Charity’s Sarah Harding Breast Cancer Appeal, this important study has been made possible. 🩵

Hi everyone - we wanted to share a special update in honour of our Sarah today 💗

As you know, we have continued to raise money in Sarah’s name for The Christie hospital’s groundbreaking breast cancer research.

Today The Christie announce they are appointing a new full-time researcher thanks to the Sarah Harding Breast Cancer Appeal, part of The Christie Charity.

Dr Hannah Harrison will spearhead an ambitious research programme to reduce breast cancer risk by developing innovative prevention strategies.

We are thrilled with the progress being made in Sarah’s name into preventing breast cancer in young women. Sarah believed in the power of progress and so to have a dedicated researcher focusing on this important work is hugely significant. This fellowship is more than research - it’s hope, it’s progress, and it’s a promise that her fight will help protect future generations of young women. Every breakthrough is a step towards a brighter future where young women can live free from the fear of breast cancer.

Watch Channel 4 at 10pm on Thursday 4 December to find out about ground-breaking cancer research happening right here at The Christie.

Professor Caroline Dive is the director of the Cancer Research UK Biomarker Centre, which is based at our Withington site.

She and her team of experts from Cancer Research UK, The University of Manchester and The Christie are developing innovative blood tests to detect cancer, looking for tiny fragments of cancer DNA in the blood that give them a lot of information about how and when to treat it.

Through her work, we meet mechanic Lee, who is being treated for cancer of unknown primary at The Christie. Doctors can’t find where his cancer started. Could Caroline’s pioneering blood tests help? And Damian hopes to join a trial to test if his recent skin cancer could be coming back, so he can move on with family life.

You can also stream ‘Cancer Detectives: Finding the Cures’ now on Channel 4. Link is in the comments. 👇
