MPC ARTIST TALK — PAUL WOLFGANG WEBSTER

We’re delighted to welcome Paul Wolfgang Webster this Saturday for an artist talk. Wolfgang has built a photographic career spanning more than three decades, working across portraiture, fashion, music, commercial photography and the documentation of Manchester and its culture.

Wolfgang has photographed an extraordinary range of people and subjects, while building a body of work deeply connected to the North of England, music, portraiture and the changing character of Manchester.

His achievements include the publication of Made in the North, exhibitions in the UK, Europe and the United States, and five portraits held in the permanent collection of the National Portrait Gallery in London, including portraits of Fred Dibnah, Professor Brian Cox and Barrie Rutter.

There’ll also be an opportunity for questions and open conversation with Wolfgang about photography, creative development and the realities of maintaining a long-term career behind the camera.

Last night we launched our first MPC Street Sessions: a more focused exploration of the craft, designed for photographers who want to slow down, ask questions, experiment and develop their eye with others.

Street photography is not simply taking photographs on the street. It’s about observation, timing, curiosity and learning to see the extraordinary in everyday life.

We shared our thoughts on the talking points brilliantly put together by Matt Cole, then we put those ideas into practice together on the streets of Manchester.

Whether you’re completely new to street photography or have been shooting for years, these sessions are about developing your own way of seeing rather than following a formula.

Thanks to everyone who came along and made the first session such a great evening. We’re looking forward to building these into a regular part of the MPC calendar.

Hello! Tonight we would like to share our new group MPC Street! 👋📸

Our first free session will take place on Wednesday 29th July, 6.00–7.30 pm, at Social Refuge .

This is new meet-up for MPC members who want to explore the craft, history and ideas behind street photography. We’ll meet roughly once a month, with each session centred on a different theme.

Before each session, we’ll share a couple of readings to complete in your own time using Notion. During the session, we’ll discuss the readings together and look at a curated selection of photographs.

Sessions will be led by Lee Cooper and James | Street Photographer. Places are limited, so please book in advance using Eventbrite link pinned on stories.

We had an amazing time this past Sunday in Liverpool for the opening of ‘Manchester Gardens’ at Open Eye Gallery

The work came from our recent open call asking members of MPC for their interpretation of Manchester’s gardens and green spaces, documenting the people, places and moments that shape them.

The exhibition marks an important milestone for MPC and we are incredibly grateful for the opportunity to exhibit our work in one of the most prestigious photography galleries in the country.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for the launch, contributed work to the exhibition and helped bring the project together. The exhibition is a powerful reminder of what can happen when photographers are given space, encouragement and a platform.

We are proud of how far MPC has come, and excited about where this partnership with Open Eye Gallery could lead next.

We’re pleased to announce our next MPC Artist Talk with Manchester Photographer

Debbie will be joining us to share more about her photographic practice, the ideas that shape her work, and the process behind making images.

The talk will offer an insight into how Debbie approaches photography, from subject matter and visual style to the experiences, influences, and questions that inform her work.

This will be a chance to hear directly from a working artist working, to learn more about their journey, and to think about how photography can be used to observe, document, interpret, and connect with the world around us.

Whether you are a photographer, artist, student, enthusiast, or simply interested in visual culture, this will be a welcoming opportunity to listen, ask questions, and meet others with a shared interest in photography.

MPC Artist Talks are designed to create space for photographers to share their work in an accessible and supportive environment, while helping build stronger local networks around photography.

Whether you’re picking up a camera for the first time or have been photographing for years, this open call is for you. We’re looking for images that explore the theme of Manchester Gardens.

This is a chance to have your work seen, share your perspective, and be part of a collaboration with one of the UK’s leading photography galleries. Your work will be displayed alongside the main ‘Is This A Garden?’ exhibition (26 June – 31 August)
