What does being part of a creative community mean to you? 📷

MPC is inviting expressions of interest in The Power of Communities, a collaborative photography project led by Estelle Cadwallader as part of her Master’s final major project at the University of Huddersfield.

Through four workshops exploring community, belonging, connection and identity, participants will create photographs, share ideas and look at the people and places that shape their lives.

The proposed activities include a photo walk, creating a community map of Manchester, exploring how to photograph things we cannot see, such as friendship or belonging, and making portraits through objects, places and personal details.

It’s an opportunity to explore storytelling through photography, work alongside others and reflect on what being part of a community means to you.

Taking part is voluntary. You can choose what you share, whether you are photographed, and have a say in which images and accompanying words are included. You will retain ownership of the photographs you create.

We are very saddened to hear of the passing of MPC member Brian Egerton.

Brian was a proper old-school Manchester character: strong, resilient, full of stories, and someone who had pushed through many challenges in his life while somehow maintaining a positive outlook.

Anyone who spent time with Brian will know he could chat for Britain. He was always ready for a conversation, usually with a camera close by, and had been a familiar face within Manchester’s photography community for many years.

Photography communities are ultimately built by the people who keep turning up. To walks, events, exhibitions and conversations. Brian was one of those people and it was a privilege to spend time with him.

Rest well, Brian.

Join us tomorrow for the second instalment of MPC Street Sessions where we will be examining the question of how do you approach street photography?

Do you find the frame first; the light, architecture, colour and wait for something to happen within it?

Or do you follow people, gestures and moments, allowing the subject to lead you towards the photograph?

We’ll be exploring these two different ways of working on the street, encouraging you to slow down, experiment and think more consciously about how you make photographs.

This isn’t about finding one “correct” way to shoot. It’s about understanding your own instincts, trying a different approach and developing a stronger visual language.

Bring whatever camera you use; digital, film or phone. Open to all levels.

Summer’s nearly done, so for this weekend’s MPC walk we’re keeping it simple: colour.

We’ll be heading out around Manchester looking for those last bits of summer: bright colours, clothes, signs, reflections, little details, anything that catches your eye.

Everyone is welcome, whether you’ve been shooting for twenty years or picked up a camera last week. Bring whatever camera you have and come explore Manchester with a group of photographers who love making images and sharing ideas.

✨Today’s member showcase is from the talented Heidi Reece here’s what Heidi has to say, in their own words:

Tell us a bit about yourself and your background
I’m Heidi, a photographer and art educator from St. Helens. Over the past few years, I have worked on a project titled Dear Uncle Eddy, I want to be Defined by a Grapefruit in which I explore my experiences with obsessive and compulsive thoughts through photography, an artificially generated uncle and an impromptu trip to Barcelona.

What kind of photography do you focus on or enjoy creating the most?
I enjoy playing with the relationship between actual and artificial. What is a photograph? Is there such a genre as documentary photography? Can a photograph ‘document’ ‘reality’?

My practice seeks to question the space between ‘documentary’ and ‘fiction’, using the photographic image to deliberately blur the distinction between the two through a conceptual approach to self portraiture, narrative and sequence.

What does being a part of MPC mean to you?
Being a member of MPC is fantastic! The community is thriving, growing and sharing the love for the photographic image. There are so many opportunities that arise from being part of the community, from questioning the late great Martin Parr about his documentary photography, to being published in print and exhibited in galleries. MPC offers a space for all without pretentiousness! I am very grateful!

Who & what inspires you? 
I am continually inspired by photographers such as Silvana Trevale, Alice Poyzer, Lorca diCorcia and Jeff Wall. However, I have found my photography teachers, lecturers and students to be the most influential on my practice, as our ongoing conversations and critical discussions have encouraged me to continually explore photography, sequencing and narrative.

MPC ARTIST TALK — PAUL WOLFGANG WEBSTER

We’re delighted to welcome Paul Wolfgang Webster this Saturday for an artist talk. Wolfgang has built a photographic career spanning more than three decades, working across portraiture, fashion, music, commercial photography and the documentation of Manchester and its culture.

Wolfgang has photographed an extraordinary range of people and subjects, while building a body of work deeply connected to the North of England, music, portraiture and the changing character of Manchester.

His achievements include the publication of Made in the North, exhibitions in the UK, Europe and the United States, and five portraits held in the permanent collection of the National Portrait Gallery in London, including portraits of Fred Dibnah, Professor Brian Cox and Barrie Rutter.

There’ll also be an opportunity for questions and open conversation with Wolfgang about photography, creative development and the realities of maintaining a long-term career behind the camera.

Last night we launched our first MPC Street Sessions: a more focused exploration of the craft, designed for photographers who want to slow down, ask questions, experiment and develop their eye with others.

Street photography is not simply taking photographs on the street. It’s about observation, timing, curiosity and learning to see the extraordinary in everyday life.

We shared our thoughts on the talking points brilliantly put together by Matt Cole, then we put those ideas into practice together on the streets of Manchester.

Whether you’re completely new to street photography or have been shooting for years, these sessions are about developing your own way of seeing rather than following a formula.

Thanks to everyone who came along and made the first session such a great evening. We’re looking forward to building these into a regular part of the MPC calendar.
