31 MARCH ‘26: SEEDLING TOUR - I explain what hardening off means and show these plants on my hardening off wall:

🌷Orlaya
🌷Calendula
🌷Sweet peas (inc. whether to pinch/not pinch)
🌷Cerinthe
🌷Cornflowers (inc. how to pinch)
🌷scabious
🌷Larkspur
🌷Ammi majus

I explain how to tell if a seedling is ready to be potted on:
🌷Mallow
🌷Rudbeckia
🌷Ageratum (a name I just can’t pronounce 🙈)
🌷Cosmos
🌷Stocks (never pinch these BTW)
🌷Statice
🌷Snapdragons (inc. how to pinch)
🌷Scarlet flax (looking quite sad and eaten)
🌷Echinacea (slow, but growing nonetheless)
🌷Cynoglossum

Plus at the end I cover how to tell if a plant needs watering. And the easiest way to water that prevents damping off and other problems.

If your weather app is showing frost while you’re away, don’t assume it’ll change. Even if the forecast shifts the next day, err on the side of caution and prepare for the worst.

Before you leave, water your seedlings well and give them a feed of liquid seaweed - it helps strengthen them against the cold.

Make sure air can circulate around them and then cover with horticultural fleece. Standard fleece protects down to about minus two, heavy duty handles minus five.

Try not to let it sit directly on the leaves and tuck it in around the boxes (if using) and seedlings. I didn’t say this in the video, but if your seedlings are in a greenhouse or cold frame, make sure the leaves are not touching the glass otherwise they will get frost burn.

It takes five minutes and it’s the difference between coming home to healthy seedlings or coming home to mush.

No greenhouse? It’s really no problem. Clear boxes with clear lids work brilliantly. But now we are fast moving towards spring (this reel was recorded mid-Feb), keep the lids off when it’s dry.

Your seedlings need fresh air to grow strong stems and avoid damping off. When it rains, prop the lids open.

Move the boxes around to follow the sun, and tuck them into a sheltered spot when the frosts come.

A simple, flexible setup resulting in strong plants. Never worry again that you don’t have a greenhouse!
