Heaton Park Astronomy Group

Heaton Park Astronomy Group Meets at the bowls pavilion, Heaton Park at 7 pm on Thursday evenings during the winter months. We're a very friendly, informal group.

This is our page - see also our Facebook group for more posts and discussions. Heaton Park Astronomy Group meetings are held in the Bowls Pavilion between 7pm and 9pm every Thursday during the winter months. We are a community group, free to attend and suitable for all ages - though we do ask that under 16s be accompanied by an adult. Newcomers are always made welcome, whether complete beginners o

r those who already have some knowledge of astronomy. It's our aim to provide something for everyone. We have talks and discussions on various aspects of the hobby and when the sky is clear we go outside so we can use our telescopes and binoculars to observe whatever planets, nebulae and other interesting celestial objects are currently on view. We typically have at least four or five telescopes set up which we encourage anyone without a telescope to have a look through. There is disabled access to the meeting room, viewing area and toilets. Refreshments are available. If you would like more information, please contact us - or just turn up, we'd love to see you.

Our night sky notes for May are now on the website: https://www.hpag.co.uk/the-night-sky-this-month
There's not a lot going on this month. There is some astronomical darkness early in the month, but by month end we lose it until the end of July. Jupiter is still observable although getting lower in the evening sky, and Venus is shining bright.

Tonight's meeting 2/4/26
It's the last meeting of our 2025/6 season this evening, and it's party time! We'll be having a quiz (with small prizes), the raffle will be drawn, and there will be a selection of nibbles, including vegetarian options - so you might not want to eat too much before you come! Please don't bring any food unless you have special dietary needs. If you haven't bought raffle tickets yet and you want some, they will be on sale early in the meeting, and the raffle will be drawn later. Prizes are luxury Easter Eggs and a choice of nightscape prints.

The talk will be 'Building a Shed Observatory', and we'll have videos about the night sky in April, space telescopes, and planet Neptune. We'll be selling raffle tickets again, with the draw taking place around 8pm at our last meeting of the season next Thursday 2nd April.

Tonight's meeting 19/03/26
All the weather forecasts are saying that it's going to be clear out this evening, so at long last it's looking like we will be able to have scopes outside. For those who want to stay indoors, we'll have a video of a Gresham College lecture by Sky at Night's Chris Lintott about galaxies outside the Milky Way. And we'll be selling raffle tickets, the draw taking place at our last meeting of the season on 2nd April.

Tonight's meeting 12/3/26
It's forecast to be cloudy yet again this evening, so we will be indoors. The talk will be 'The Formation and Death of Stars'. We'll be having videos about north star Polaris; what will happen to planet Earth when the Sun nears the end of its life; and Earth as seen from near-Earth orbit and from the outer reaches of the solar system.

We've had a few clear nights this week, but it looks like tonight won't be one of them! It's forecast 100% cloud cover for this evening. The talk will be 'The Winchcombe Meteorite - 5 years on'. We'll have a video about the night sky in March, and a vintage episode of The Sky at Night - Mapping the Moon.

Jupiter is still bright in the evening sky and Venus gets higher through the month in the west after sunset. The length of astronomical darkness is reducing through the month, but still going on for 7 hours at month end. There are no meteor showers. Orion and the other winter constellations are still prominent in the evening sky.

And don't believe all the hype about this weekend's so-called planet parade!
