✨ Huge congratulations to artist Holly Graham and the team at Manchester Art Gallery on the opening of The Warp/ The Weft/ The Wake! πŸ§΅πŸŽ‰

Holly has previously worked with us at 422 Arts on THREADS: Textiles & Tall Tales, a community archive project reflecting on Manchester’s textile history, local residents’ personal relationships to cloth, and the links between fabric, industry, empire, and local memory πŸ’« πŸ“”We're thrilled that part of this work is now accessible at the exhibition! 😍 Make sure to visit to experience this thoughtful and beautifully woven project.

This commission was acquired as part of the 20/20 project by bringing together 20 emerging artists of colour and 20 UK public art collections, leading to 20 new permanent acquisitions πŸ™Œ It's wonderful to see Holly’s research and practice evolving through this exciting new commission β€οΈπŸ‘

If you're in Liverpool next Thursday, please join at for the opening of this new exhibition curated by our very own πŸŽ‰ πŸŽ‰ The Contactless Condition is the first UK solo show by artist featuring new video, sound, and photographic installation works created since 2020 πŸ’« more info πŸ‘‡

πŸ“… Thursday, 3 October, 6 -8 PM
πŸ“ John Lennon Building, Exhibition Research Lab Gallery, LJMU

Developed during the onset of a global pandemic and its subsequent crises, this selection of artworks raises questions of access, power, and tangibility while suggesting an expanded understanding of the β€˜Contactless’—not merely as a technological solution, but as an emerging living condition. In a heavily occupied world where the scope and undoing of the damage of colonisation of territories, resources, and cultures are constantly renegotiated β€” what new forms of extraction and capitalisation of the 'unclaimed' continue to arise? Shedding light onto new forms of algorithmic capitalism and technologies of reach, these works unfold the relations between data and coloniality while suggesting performative ways to reclaim and critically engage with newly evolving forms of governance.

πŸŒ… This Sky is Your Sky is officially here! ✨ Our new public art commission by artist Bill Balaskas has been in the works for over a year, after being shortlisted from more than 100 applications to our 2023 open call 🌟 It was selected by our neighbours, volunteers, and local community members in a public vote event at 422 Manchester last November, with its production carried out in close collaboration β€” incorporating their feedback, inputs, and aspirations throughout the process πŸ’™

The installation has two parts: an illuminated outdoor sign with the phrase 'This Sky is Your Sky' and a series of semi-transparent window films showcasing images of the local sky 🌀️ This text-based work is not just a poetic declaration but also a symbolic reference to 422’s history as one of the first free public libraries in the country πŸ“š The phrase is a powerful reminder that this building β€” and by extension, the neighbourhood β€” belongs to the people. 🏘️

The sky images were taken by community members during a photography workshop held in collaboration with Manchester Metropolitan University πŸ“Έ The light filtering through these window films creates a stunning visual experience, connecting the building’s interior with its surroundings 🌈

This Sky is Your Sky solidifies 422 as a place where everyone is welcome to find support, dream freely, and look towards the future πŸŒŸπŸ’« follow our website link below to learn more πŸ‘‡
