⚖️ Judges Service at Manchester Cathedral ⛪️

Yesterday, 1099 had the honour of representing Greater Manchester Wing at the 2026 Judges’ Service at Manchester Cathedral, marking the beginning of the new legal year.

Our cadets and staff proudly provided a Guard of Honour, alongside Greater Manchester Police and Fire Cadets, welcoming a wide range of distinguished guests and dignitaries from across Greater Manchester.

The occasion was made even more special as it marked the first official engagement of our very own FS Oliver Speakman, in his new role as the Lord Lieutenant’s Cadet for Greater Manchester. 🎖️

We are incredibly proud to represent the Royal Air Force Air Cadets across Greater Manchester and to play our part in such a prestigious occasion.

Thank you to the staff and cadets involved as always. 💪

Another successful bag pack for SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity completed a few weeks ago! 🙌

As part of our ongoing support for SSAFA, 1099 commits to supporting four bag packs every year, helping raise vital funds for such a worthwhile cause in our local community.

This latest event was our 3rd SSAFA bag pack of 2026, with our cadets and volunteers giving up their time to pack bags, chat with members of the public and help spread awareness of the important work SSAFA does. 🇬🇧

A huge thank you to everyone who gave up part of their weekend to support us, whether you were there for the morning, afternoon or all day. Your time and effort really does make a difference! A special thank you to Cdt Sgt Oakes, the squadrons Charity Lead who organised and managed the cadets on the day along side our supportive staff team.

Well done to all our cadets, volunteers and everyone involved, and thank you to SSAFA for allowing us to continue supporting such an important cause. 👏

3 down, 1 to go for 2026! 💪

Duke of Edinburgh Gold Practice Expedition 🥾

Last week, five of our cadets took on their Gold DofE Practice Expedition in the stunning Lake District.

The team performed exceptionally well, tackling difficult navigation, long days and some testing weather conditions. 🌧️⛰️

The skills, resilience and experience gained during this expedition have put them in a great position for the next step, their Gold Qualifying Expedition. 🎯

We couldn’t be prouder of this group, who received glowing feedback from their supervisor. They demonstrated excellent teamwork, camp discipline and high morale throughout... even if their group meal of pesto pasta left a little to be desired! 🍝😂

A huge thank you to all the staff who gave up their time to support the expedition. Experiences like this simply wouldn’t be possible without the commitment of our fantastic staff team.

Massive well done to everyone involved! 👏

🏆 Going for Gold — 3 Times! 🥇🥇🥇

This summer, three of our most committed cadets have achieved the Gold Badge in their respective specialist fields, the highest level of achievement within their disciplines. ⭐

📡 Sgt Oakes — Advanced Cyber Specialist

Sgt Oakes spent a week at RAF Cosford’s No.1 Radio School, undertaking the Advanced Cyber Specialist Course. Throughout the course, he developed indepth knowledge and gained valuable experience in the world of cyber.
He’s now looking forward to putting his new skills into practice and sharing his knowledge by teaching the Bronze Cyber syllabus to our cadets. 💻

🎖️ FS Robson — Gold Leadership

FS Robson travelled to Longmoor Training Camp to undertake the Gold Leadership Course. After a challenging week of learning, assessments and leadership development, she successfully earned her Gold Badge. During the course, she also had the opportunity to meet and learn from influential leaders, including the Warrant Officer of the RAF. 👏

🚑 CWO Siwik — Gold First Aid

CWO Siwik attended the Gold First Aid Course at Holcombe Moor Training Camp, developing her knowledge and experience across a wide range of first aid scenarios.
She thoroughly enjoyed the course and particularly valued the opportunity to plan and deliver her own lesson as part of her final assessment, putting her leadership and instructional skills to the test. 🩹

We are incredibly proud of the dedication, commitment and energy these three cadets continue to put into their cadet careers. They are fantastic examples of what can be achieved through hard work and taking every opportunity available within this amazing organisation.

🌟 Massive congratulations to our three Gold superstars! 🌟

Finally, a huge thank you to all the staff who give up their time to facilitate and instruct on these prestigious courses. None of this would be possible without you! 👏

Summer Camps! ⛺✈️

What a summer it’s been for 1099!

This summer, CWO Siwik and Sgt Hamilton attended the Wing Summer Camp at RAF Valley, while Cpl Kalis and Cdt Patel headed off to the National Air & Space Camp (NASC). 🚀

Both camps were packed with incredible experiences, new challenges and opportunities that our cadets simply wouldn’t get anywhere else.

✈️ RAF Valley Summer Camp

The week at RAF Valley was jam packed with station visits, off site trips to local areas of interest, activities and plenty more. Our cadets had the opportunity to experience RAF life up close and make memories that will stay with them for years to come.

🚀 National Air & Space Camp

Meanwhile, NASC was full to the brim with STEM activities, industry visits, expert talks and hands on opportunities. Cadets also had the chance to take part in Air Experience Flying (AEF) and get to grips with the new Drone syllabus. 🛩️

From aviation and STEM to leadership, new technology and everything in between, it’s safe to say it’s been an amazing summer of opportunities! 🌟

A huge thank you to everyone who gave up their time to organise, facilitate and deliver these fantastic opportunities for our cadets. Experiences like these simply wouldn’t happen without you!

Last month, 1099 proudly took part in the Western Front Games 💪🏆

Five squadrons from the western side of GM Wing came together for an action packed evening of competition, taking on events including coneball, hockey, volleyball, archery and the always-intense tug of war.

After an incredible day, 1099 battled all the way to the final, where the overall result came down to a tie break tug of war against 70 Squadron. A huge congratulations to 70 Sqn on a well deserved victory, with 1099 securing an amazing 2nd place overall 🥈

A massive well done to all of our squadron representatives, and to every cadet from across the western squadrons who took part. Your teamwork, determination and sportsmanship made the day a fantastic success.

Finally, a huge thank you to all the staff and volunteers who worked so hard behind the scenes to make the Western Front Games possible. 👏

A Journey to Remember for our very own FS Morris ⛵️

After an incredible 10 days at sea on the Alba Venturer Boat, Flight Sergeant Morris has returned to Oban following an unforgettable Duke of Edinburgh Gold Expedition organised by Scotland & Northern Ireland Region.

The expedition, spanning over 275 nautical miles, took the crew through some of Scotland's most breathtaking scenery, including Loch Slapin, Loch Moidart, Arisaig, the Sound of Mull and the spectacular Loch Scavaig along the isle of Skye.

Along the way, the cadets developed their sailing skills, teamwork and confidence while creating memories that will last a lifetime.

A huge congratulations to FS Morris on successfully completing his Duke of Edinburgh Gold Expedition. Throughout the voyage, he embraced every challenge, built lasting friendships and gained valuable experiences that will stay with him for years to come.

Well done, FS Morris, we're incredibly proud of your achievement and can't wait to see what challenge you take on next. ⚓🌊

Last week, members of 1099 attended the prestigious Lord Lieutenant for Greater Manchester Awards Ceremony, celebrating the incredible achievements of cadets and volunteers from across the region.

🎶 FS Robson and Sgt Oakes took to the stage with the Greater Manchester Wing Band, delivering a performance that received fantastic reviews.

🇬🇧 Lancaster Bomber Remembrance Parade

On 26th July, 1099 was honoured to once again join 1938 Sqn for the annual Lancaster Remembrance Parade at Agecroft Cemetery, commemorating those who lost their lives in the Lancaster Bomber crash in Salford.

The service provided an opportunity to reflect on the sacrifice of the servicemen and civilians affected by this tragic event, ensuring their memory continues to be honoured.

Our Squadron Band was privileged to perform as guests arrived, helping to create a fitting atmosphere for the ceremony. We are grateful to have been invited to take part once again and to stand alongside the local community in remembrance.

We are incredibly proud of our cadets, who represented 1099 Squadron with professionalism, respect and dignity throughout the day. Their conduct reflected the values of the RAF Air Cadets within our community.

Lest we forget. 🫡
